Is the crop sour yet, or just impacted? Sour crop develops after the crop has been impacted for a little bit; an impacted crop prevents food from going down into the stomach, and as the food sits in the crop it ferments and then goes sour. First identify if it has already gone sour - you will smell the most god awful nastiness coming out of their mouth. If you suspect an impacted crop, separate that bird immediately and don’t give it any more food. Chickens are fine not eating for a little bit, and again if the crop is impacted it’s pointless to feed them bc the food isn’t reaching the stomach anyway. Wait until the morning and check to see if the crop is flat - it should be after 24 plus hours with no food. If not, then you have an issue.

One of my hens suffered from sour crop, over the days she became lethargic, was drinking lots of water and wasn't eating much. Her crop was always full in the mornings and felt like a balloon which was filled with liquid. After realising that she wouldn't heal without me intervening I separated her from the flock and put her in the kitchen in a dog crate. For the first day I didn't give her any food only some water now and again which had some vinegar and vitamins added to it. The next day I checked her crop and it hadn't improved, her poos were also quite watery. Over the next couple of days I would get layers pellets and mix them with liquid kefir, this would create a mash like substance which would be easy for her to eat. I read on BYC that someone who had a hen suffering from sour crop used kefir and it worked. After every meal I gently massaged her crop and once every day I would give her a very small dose of daktarin oral gel which contains miconazole, its used for humans who are suffering from fungal infections of the mouth and throat, from what I understand sour crop is caused when the crop doesn't empty fully overnight and as a result the food ferments within the crop causing a fungal infection. After giving her some daktarin oral gel with a syringe I would massage her crop to help it mix with what was in her crop. If you can get some daktarin ensure that it is the oral gel version. After continuing this routine for about 4 days she healed and is happy and healthy back with her friends. I hope this helps and good luck!!

Just the one hen with an un emptied crop small soft ball waiting for the light to go check there breath. Then of out to. It Daktarin and milk culture.

My chicken didn’t have a foul smell coming from her beak but I knew she had sour crop. I opened her beaks and took a sniff but still couldn’t smell anything.

Does it empty fully over night. She’s eating fine drinking only on mash atm garlic water yogurt liquid paraffin in the post.
