HI, I have a 6 year old araucana hen who has sour crop, she is still in good form and hungry, I'm feeding her small amounts of mushy porridge.
I have seen that the use of Nilstat from the chemist is being recommended but I can't work out the correct dose for her
She is *4.2 kg in weight, I think I worked it out but it seems like a large dose so I'm doubting myself.
any advice from people who have used this would be appreciated

* EDIT- information given to me was incorrect she is 4.2 lb - not kg

Many use miconazole (Monistat 7) cream orally for treatment of sour crop. Dosage is 1/2 inch given orally twice a day. Also acidified copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water is another type of treatment.

That sounds like a really big hen. She is over 9 pounds? Do you have a picture of your medication? Here is the dosage for nystatin in post 2:

That does seem like a large volume since 200,00 IU for 4.2 kg would be 9.24 ml 2-3 times a day.
Hi, Yes she was weighed at the vets yesterday, but I am going to double check with my own scales as thats close to the weight of my young goose, and yes it really seems like a large dose

wow, my vet wrote down kg , not pounds
She is 4.2 pounds - 1.9 kg, less than half the weight I was looking at.
I am so glad I was suspicious that it was wrong, I would have OD my girl :(

I thought Miconazole cream was for topical use only?
I have Micreme H in the first aid box, it has Micnazole as the main ingredient , would this be the same as Monistat 7 ?

Welcome to BYC. Is your Nilstat 100,000 IU per one ml? Lafeber vet recommends 300,000 IU 2-3 times a day, so that is what I will base my calculations on.

Weight in pounds, divide by 2.2, times dose, divide by IU in one ml:
4.2 / 2.2 x 300,000 / 100,000 = 5.7 ml 2-3 times a day.

Hi, yes the Nilstat is 100,000 IU per ML
Thank you so much for showing the working of the formula that is so appreciated.
Sorry but I'm fully trying to understand the process for future reference, What is the 2.2 part of the equation ?

Hello, sorry to bother. I am going to start my hen on copper sulfate soon. Her crop has been slowed by a hard molt and she is having fermentation issues. No excessively gassy or liquidy crop, but her breath smells mildly fishy and gets worse each day. Her behavior remains the same, though.

Do you have any tips on how I can safely use this if her crop isn't emptying well? And do you think it will help with speeding up her digestion?
