Sour crop with coccidia

I have a 4 month old pullet that has been battling coccidia all summer. She has been on corid but now she has sour crop too. She has a strong yeast smell coming from her mouth, balloon crop at night and in the morning and she’s been vomiting. I’ve been feeding her Greek yogurt and egg yolks for about three days after a 24 hour fast. The vet told me not to use Monistat, but she’s not getting any better so I need to know what to do next. I’ve been massaging her cropped two or three times a day and I can feel what feels like grit at the bottom of her crop. Her droppings are very small, but solid for the most part.

If the vet doesn't want you to use Miconazole, what do they suggest you use? Can they give you Nystatin?

Fecal floats reveal Coccidiosis? What dose of Corid have you been giving?

Alternative treatments for Coccidiosis are Sulfa Antibiotics or Toltrazuril, since you have a Vet, ask what they recommend and if they can give you medications.

I was give 1.5 tsp per gallon for 4 weeks. Now I’m giving 1/4 tsp for the rest of the summer. I am so over this crap. I’ve lost 25 birds so far and I have one that is paralyzed that may be end up being culled if he doesn’t improve or gets worse. It hurts my heart to lose my babies and to see them sick. The one with sour crop was the first to get sick. I thought she was going to die back in May but she is still hanging on. Her will to live is so strong because she’s literally had everything that could go wrong… go wrong. If you know what I mean. I’m thinking about using monistat today because I’ve already done what the vet said and nothing else is working and I can’t afford to take her in for a visit. They charged me $36 last week to just talk to me for 5 minutes but it’s free to talk over the phone? And if I get medication through them they charge the $36 plus the medication.

Why for 4 weeks, then for the rest of the summer?

Corid powder dose is 1 1/2tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days.

You **can** do a follow-up dosing after skipping a week at a rate of 1/3tsp Corid powder for another 5-7 days.

I would not give Corid long term like you are doing...

What exactly are her symptoms? Coccidia will show up on just about any test, it's in the poop, the intestines and in soil. Only when there is an Overload is Coccidia a problem.

If you have been giving Corid for 4 weeks, then I'd stop it all together.
Give plain fresh water. Fresh feed.



Getting a necropsy on a bird if you lose them will give you answers. I suggest that you spend the money (if there's a fee) on that instead of a vet. With paralysis and losing so many birds, I would suspect that you may be dealing with something like Marek's disease, but the only way to really know is to get a necropsy.

Having the INFO will help you know if what you are dealing with is actually treatable with medications, if you need to make some dietary changes or if you are dealing with disease where you manage symptoms or cull sick birds.


You live in TN right? I believe there is no "fee" for residents when testing is performed on livestock but give them a Call. It's better to Call the labs and talk to a pathologist, often they will work with you on a lot of things. I had a necropsy done at the beginning and that’s how I found out it was cocci. Then the vet has tested their poop every 2 weeks. She said “there were LOTS of cocci in their droppings” that’s why they said to continue all summer. But I will take them off for a week and see how that does. I’ve read that cocci can cause paralysis also

Thank you. I'll just quote what I posted on your other thread.

Marek's or Avian Lymphoid Leucosis would be my best guess.
They found Lymphocytes in the brain and heart.
Intestines - Enteritis and Coccidiosis - this goes hand in hand. Severe Coccidiosis often does a lot of damage leading to Enteritis.

Likely the birds have damaged intestines, but I'd begin treating with a different Coccidiostat and get them on antibiotics to help with the Enteritis.

Marek's disease and/or AVL, there's not a lot you can do about that except treat symptoms when they arise.

I'm sorry you've been dealing with this.

One thing to try, my birds have gone through this, squishy crop, not eating, just oblivious. Activated charcoal. Make a paste, drop it slowly into her beak. Charcoal has helped my ducks, hens,dog, cat.. between numerous poison weeds that I pull by the roots but never seem to go away, and a neighbor who uses mouse bait,.. this has saved the life of a few of my birds. It's inexpensive powder and I keep it in stock for all suspicious, quick illness things. You don't want to overuse it since it draws the good and bad but just wanted to share.
So many things can go wrong with chickens but I find this helpful.
