Sour crop

I think Two Crows on an old thread noted some limitations with Nystatin due to full crops. So definitely from what I've heard there needs to be a clear or vomited crop for that med. And on the old thread she found Clotrimazole cream actually fought through debris better. Is that still holding true Two Crows after a few years since the old thread?

Absolutely in the limitations of Nystatin. It MUST come into full contact with the yeast, no food can be present even water reduces its ability to work full strength. And with a sour crop, these conditions of nothing in the crop usually don't exist. You would have to flush the entire crop out each time you dosed. With my first experience with sour crop, I went to a poultry vet, and was diagnosed with sour crop and gave me Nystatin. It didnt do a thing for my hen and in order to save her, I had to start trying all kinds of homemade concoctions and eventually I came up with the right ingredients of anti fungal meds to cure her.

BUT....I did save the rest of this Nystatin (the vet gave me a pint of it) and later that year had a case of doughy crop. Totally different story on doughy crops since the entire crop becomes one big dough ball, its ALL yeast. Especially first thing in the morning when the dough ball is dry and the yeast are hungry. So in this case, Nystatin whipes it out fast. Not so much with sour crop.

If it works on humans, generally it works on birds. Many times I end up researching human diseases to diagnose and treat a bird.

I case any of you are curious, nystatin is not absorbed, so it's perfectly safe for the liver and other organs. Nystatin must touch the yeast to be effective.

Thanks Kathy. I didn't know that about Nystatin/Liver safety. But it does make sense. Azygous and I got a bit off topic with the toenail fungus meds. Those are a different class albeit I think Dr.s do try Nystatin first before they go to the heavy hitters like Sporonox or oral Lamisil. But I digress because I'm hoping I don't muddy up this thread with all the antifungal side talk. LOL. I sometimes do that.
