Sour crop

My girl sounds awfully gurgley again, though she’s eating an egg for dinner happily. Someone in my local chicken group found a country vet that is far far cheaper than my local avian vet, so even though it’s quite a hike (about two hours!) I think I’ll take her there tomorrow.

:fl Good luck! Let us know what happens. :hugs

Honestly, the gurgling sounds an awful lot like she’s aspirated into her lungs. I wonder if I ought to give her a dose of Tylan since sooner is better than later when it comes to that (we lost a dog to that once and ugh, it was awful). Any thoughts? The vet tomorrow is definitely happening!

Do you have other antibiotics?

I have some amoxicillin, but it’s oral— I hesitate to give an antibiotic that would go through her crop directly.
My thinking was that the tylosin won't treat gram-negative bacteria, and giving it by injection can cause severe muscle necrosis, especially at the therapeutic level, which is over 1 ml 3-4 times a day. What time are you going to the vet?

But given her crop isn't draining, by injection would be better.

I’ll be taking her around noon, I think. Since her condition hasn’t changed and she did eat well (with some monistat in the food) I suppose I’ll just wait— if antibiotics are in order I suppose he’ll give her a heavy dose anyhow.

I'm also a little perplexed here: I have seen comments that you shouldn't give a chicken with sour crop an antibiotic...but then recommendations that I try fishzole, which is essentially amoxicillin (and antibiotic). Any thoughts on this, chicken vets? Again, I'm trying to get an antifungal, but I'd like to know thoughts on the fishzole/antibiotic thing for future reference.
DMSO is anti fungal and will also pass through the skin, carrying with it any antifungal agent you may choose to try. Most feed stores carry it in the equine department. I have used it with great success in a vaporizer for fungal respiratory infection. Just be sure to get it on bare skin that you've washed well as it will carry germs though the skin also.

Its never a good idea to administer antibiotics to a bird with a yeast infection unless you are sure they have a bacterial infection. Some yeasts bloom like mad with antibiotics present, making the yeast infection 10 times worse, so its not worth the chance unless you know she has a bacterial infection.

Good luck at the vet, keep us posted! :)
