if unsure next time, feel the crop first tging in the morning if its empty then your ok xx

Okay, I feel their crops everyday now:)

I'm new to raising chickens and one of my girls had a huge bulge in her neck and she didn't want to leave the coop. I researched online and learned about sour crop. I didn't even know what a "crop" was until 4 days ago reading this blog. I tilted her many times and let all the liquid and food empty from her crop. I gave her about a teaspoon of red wine, withheld water for 12 hrs, and no food for 24 hrs. I gave her a second teaspoon of wine in the afternoon. It worked like a charm! I gave her scrambled eggs mixed with plain yogurt the next day and she gobbled it up. The very next day she was back in the yard with my other chicken like the sour crop never happened! So glad I found this blog :)

Fermented feed is full of lactic acid bacteria. Sour crop is caused by an overgrowth of candida yeasts. Lactobacilli are the "good guys."

We've got on chicken who we're almost certain has sour crop. She's being throwing up brown stuff, and is shaking. She's just lying in the grass (we've isolated her) and keeps opening her bill. Help! We don't really want to do drugs on her, though.

I have read a lot, talked to a lot of different chicken folks, even drove 120 miles round trip to the nearest avain vet in the last week. My favorite little hen "ducky" has been off and on for two weeks. I got her and 2 other hens, and two roosters when they were chicks 4 years ago. Now I have only her (ducky, whom I suspect is a small red sexlink) and a bhrama chicken. They free-range some when I'm home, but mainly live in their condo. They have always eaten layena crumbles, and the occasional treat. Ducky starting acting lethargic and after checking her, then my friends on here I suspected impacted crop. A little olive oil and Apple cider vinegar and the next day like nothing happened. A week later as she was out roaming the yard. Same thing. Lethargic standing behind a tree. I did more research only to find her crop is squishy. Sour crop. Against better judgement, I massage her crop and genly tilt her forward. Dark liquid came out her beak. It's just so scary to do after all the reading. It brings her immediate relief! Next day same thing. Had to tip her again. So finally found a vet and took her in. He says this is a very sick bird. I always knew she was the runt of the chicks, almost bantam size I would assure. He tells me that her skinny size points to a genetic issue that she has lived with forever. He says her breast bone is was they call a razor breast or something. So now I'm going bananas trying to figure out how to save her. He did not seem optimistic as he did a crop wash, several antibiotic shots etc. The bill said $150ish and he told the receptionist to only charge me $50. Though it was appreciated it sure left me feeling deflated. So now as she's sleeping in my house on a heating pad, with the wife out at Walmart 30 minutes away gathering supplies to sew a makeshift crop bra until the one she ordered arrives. It's a helpless feeling. I know it's just a chicken, but it's a chicken that naps with the weiner dogs, and sneeks in buddies trucks when the leave a door open. Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated! Thinking of the monistat approach tomorrow.

Is this sour crop? I have a 2 year old Rhode island red that is pale, has purple tipped comb, squishy crop, breathe stinks but doesn't smell BAD. She also just stands there, she eats but not a lot. She hasn't lost wait because she is normaly a heavy chicken and by holding her I can tell. She isn't as active either. It puzzles me because she has some signs but not "all". I don't really know what to do to treat her either. I know you can try apple cider vinegar. Any ideas would he helpful! :)

Take her off food and check crop first thing in the morning. Crop should be empty. If it is swollen and squishy then, it could be time to start sour crop protocol.

Sounds like it. Did the crop clear in the morning (empty)? If not you'll need to read some of the helpful information in this thread. You'll need to start by vomiting the bird. Treating the empty crop with an anti-yeast. then slowly reintroducing feed in a wet or slurry like form. There are some methods for reintroducing the feed mentioned throughout this thread.

It is not good to hang your chicken upside down. the safer way is to give your chicken one teaspoon of vinegar in there water 3 times a week we gave it to our chicken and her crop seem to be much much better.
I hope this helps!
