It is windy as the dickens here!!! Part of a roof on one of my tractors had broken and blown off. The roo was out wandering around but when I started towards the tractor he obediently hopped back up on the roof and went back in. That is their door so he knows in and out.

I lost one of my Muscovy last night! They are all fat and healthy so I have no idea why she keeled over. They are cooped on the east side of the barn and closed up at night. She obviously had something else going on. In some way she had to be weak for the cold to get her. Ducks are very hardy creatures. Although, she is one I did not know the exact age on so maybe that had something to do with it.

I did not lose any chicks. Everyone in the brooder room was snug in their plastic tubs under heat lamps and the ones on the floor without heat lamps were fine. I went into the brooder coop at the end of the barn expecting to find dead youngsters since they are on wire floors and no heat but they were all happy and hungry.

I still have about 6 tractors to finish watering but had to come in to warm my fingers and face. No matter how I bundle up I can't totally cover those areas and with 20 mph winds it can do some minor damage to exterior exposed parts. One day I will invest in some gloves that can get wet and keep my hands dry and warm and I still be able to work in them.

Oh! It is just miserable out there with the wind blowing so strong and the temps so low!

Oh, wow! I am so glad my outside water faucets are not frozen! I drug the hose around to all the tractors it could reach and filled the duck water containers. The pools were frozen and I left them because they will get in and swim in this weather. I would not be so paranoid except for the wind.

Now I just have to finish those last few with the water wagon. We have so few days like this I do not mind dealing with it. If it was 3 months like summer I would give up! I hate the wind and freezing wind is the absolute worse!

There may be a few on here that are local to that route. Sadly, most of us are not.

I am starting to set more eggs now, although a good many are selling I am trying to set more for myself. The spring always brings lots of people wants back yard chickens and I never seem to have enough to sell. I usually wind up selling some of what I want to keep for myself. Hard to believe when I was at my peak with 700 this past summer. I do not plan to have that many this summer but aren't I the one that said I would not hatch through this winter? It is a sick obsession!

Wind is blowing horrible here too...all my juvies are alive and well and my big birds too!! Waters were froze but thanks to everyone on here I knew to carry a jug of hot with me!

Thanks for the remarks on my Boomer...and so sorry to hear about your silkie Kimberly and your babies Susanne...its a bad day today...

On a funny note my son decided to help me with the horse water by standing in the tub on the ice ( which was thick enough to hold him!) and jump on it to break it...got his feet wet!!And I missed the whole thing,of course I would have not let him do it but it was funny when he came in to tell me!

I'm so sorry for those who've had losses!

It was SO cold here last night. I worried about the chickens and my cats but they all did well thank goodness. I know the cold weather has really only just started but I'm already daydreaming of springtime! I've already started planning my garden and what chickens I'll add to the flock

Can't wait for baby chickies and hopefully some call ducklings as well! I plan on trying to add a couple olive eggers, ameraucanas, wyandottes, and leghorns to my layer flock this year. I think otherwise I'm going to focus on bantams as far as breeding goes. I know for sure I want to get some crele OEGB and a couple colors of d'anvers..probably millie fleur and either mottled or lavender...who knows! There's too many choices! The bantams are just easier for me to deal with right now with school & work keeping me busy...plus I can fit more in the space I have. Maybe later on once I finish school and get a teaching job I can branch out a little into the large fowl breeds I'm interested in.

I have the day off of work so I plan on running some errands and hopefully working on the coops a little. They need new shavings badly! I hope everyone has a great day and stays warm!

I'm sorry for your loss, But Please help me learn from your experience...

I thought a hen would be able to withstand the cold without a heat lamp when feathered out. are silkies different?

I don't want to seem un sympathetic, but I do want to learn. We don't currently have silkies, but you never know.

Honestly last winter even with all the snow.. I did NOTHING but hang a normal bulb in with them...no coop either..... just a windbreak and lamp. I don't think I lost any due to the weather...I lost some in the spring....but to a dog.

I did have to rescue one who got into the part of the pen that was uncovered and he was butt deep in a snow drift

The feathers are different on silkies...actually don't even look like feathers...looks like fine hair or silk threads. Silkies can't really fly either, because of the feathers,,,it is more a bunch of flapping & jumping

This is my lavender boy I lost to a dog or raccoon or something last year...Can you tell how the feathers are in this picture? Only one I have handy without logging into facebook.... you can see some on my FB page which is linked over on the side as my website.

I've about had it! Something I suppose was a raccoon brOke into my coop with my chicks and I have a missing chick. I think it got pulled through the wire and eaten. And everything else is okay. But I'm concerned the hawk will come back for my adult birds...

I'm highly considering a great pyrenese. Anyone know where I can get one? I would prefer a young adult over a puppy.
