Oh Mary..so sorry - let me know anything you want to ask....will be glad to help.

Silkies do not roost, and they love to pile. When I have a broody on eggs, I move her to either a bin or dog carrier. Sometimes with first time broodies that breaks them, though. Usually does not bother the older ones.

It is windy as the dickens here!!! Part of a roof on one of my tractors had broken and blown off. The roo was out wandering around but when I started towards the tractor he obediently hopped back up on the roof and went back in. That is their door so he knows in and out.

I lost one of my Muscovy last night! They are all fat and healthy so I have no idea why she keeled over. They are cooped on the east side of the barn and closed up at night. She obviously had something else going on. In some way she had to be weak for the cold to get her. Ducks are very hardy creatures. Although, she is one I did not know the exact age on so maybe that had something to do with it.

I did not lose any chicks. Everyone in the brooder room was snug in their plastic tubs under heat lamps and the ones on the floor without heat lamps were fine. I went into the brooder coop at the end of the barn expecting to find dead youngsters since they are on wire floors and no heat but they were all happy and hungry.

I still have about 6 tractors to finish watering but had to come in to warm my fingers and face. No matter how I bundle up I can't totally cover those areas and with 20 mph winds it can do some minor damage to exterior exposed parts. One day I will invest in some gloves that can get wet and keep my hands dry and warm and I still be able to work in them.

Oh! It is just miserable out there with the wind blowing so strong and the temps so low!

You lost a duck!!?? wow - I agree had to be something else going on.

You do more for your ducks than we do. We have houses & shelter in the runs, but not closeable so most of the time they only go inside to lay eggs (WHEN they are laying

) and are outside in the snow, rain, etc.... last winter the pens were covered BUT all of them would find a place that wasn't and stay there when it was raining

Nicole doesn't like closing them up since ducks don't sleep like chickens do.

I didn't stand in the tubs or pools last year...but I always break the ice with my feet.. DH would come out to the horse water tubs with a shovel and make me scoop out the big broken pieces. He taps it and takes it out in one piece or 2 or 3 big chunks.

I have no rubber boots this year....so I am SOL on stomping ice.

I need to get some. But IDK if I will or not. I may try this winter without them, but I have no idea what I will wear....my crocs are slick on bottom from being worn so much, my ropers (boots) are slick bottom too........hmmmmmmm I may end up busting ice with my tail!
