I am just catching up, here on BYC.

Amy when Robert placed the order for Turkeys, it said for a ship date in June. Of course there is no confirmation on the order, but I would be surprised if they came any earlier.

I promise as we get updates, I will keep you informed. Oh yeah, eggs, I will try and PM you so we can work things out. Our Turkey hen seems to like the new nesting box, so maybe we will be getting some of her eggs fertile in the next couple of months. I think it is still early, but she is laying an egg almost every day.

Yancy, I love your little dog! She is precious. And so good not to snap at the birds. Roxy thinks they should be dinner, especially when one crows.

I was wondering how Roxy was with the babies. Schatzi has seen the grown girls a couple of times and she goes nuts. The first time, Lou Ann had her at her house for a few hours and forgot that she had never seen the chickens. There is a shed that is right beside their run and Schatzi went underneath it so she could bark and snarl and no one could get to her. Now, if she sees the chickens, she is on a leash!!!! She is one reason there will not be a coop and runin our backyard. I could keep her away from them, but I think she would drive me nuts!

Joy, just saw this and I am sorry to hear you are having such a bad time with you birds. I hope you get the culprits before they get anymore birds. This is such a bad time of year with the cold as it get the predators out looking for food.

Thanks Heidi, this week I've had fox, coyote, the neighbors 2 dogs and numerous hawks. Not to mention my own dogs.

Tonight I have 107 layer hens locked up tight in my new barn coop. I'm so excited, pictures to follow soon. Tomorrow I will be moving more of the layers into the barn. Now to get these birds laying better. Right now I'm worried about my ducks as they sleep out in the yard. Hopefully I will be able to convince them to go into a fenced yard at night.....

I'm planning to bribe them with their swimming pool. We haven't filled it up for a few days since it's been below freezing. They'll be excited to have a bath and maybe they will go wherever I put that pool. At least that's my plan.

Susanne, Harriet, the Ameraucana is getting her ink working better in her printer. Today's egg was still green, but definitely had a blue tinge to it. The first one she laid looks light olive-colored next to it.
Maranda, the Cuckoo Marans may have laid her first egg today. Not sure. This one was a little different shade of brown and was smaller than what the buffs have been laying and definitely different than the SLW's. It is also the first egg that had any little bumps on it. I guess we will know for sure in the next couple of days.

And yes! They are horribly messy! Mine seldom get out and never together, only for holding time or TV time but that is now limited since Roxy is not so good with baby birds yet. But just from their cage they are nasty little creatures but Terry won't let me put them down in the barn. I have a hard enough time keeping this house even close to looking liveable, much less having birds that are such messy creatures. I know your very neat house can't stand too much in the way of house birds. Maybe just one at a time out of the cage time?

Phoebe is a HOT MESS...she's a spoiled brat(due to her dog sitter(my mom) ). But both my dogs are great with all the chickens. I think they have the fear of ME.

Piper and Phoebe know that chickens are NOT to be messed with. Now if I could Teach that nasty roo that I'm the boss. My Goodness he hates me. URG ARG...I have even been consindering gettting a Blue Orp Roo, and leaving the JG roo... But it feels like family, so well we know you just have to put up with it... I just wish you could see me fight that Huge Roo in the backyard..it has to be way to funny. Cause he doesn't back down...

Just wondering if anybody else has a Roo that is nasty to you, but good to his flock.? Cause my Roo Rocks with his flock, but oh so nasty to me!! lol

Just wanted to share a few pictures of my new barn coop. The chickens are happy in there and there seems to be enough room for a few more birds so I'll be moving some more tomorrow. Next project is a brooder room on the other side of the barn.

Front door with a rooster standing ready to greet all guests.

Inside the coop

Temporary yard in back of the coop. I have no idea why this picture is showing big and the others are small. I'm still trying to figure this new stuff out.

I love it! I especially love the door. What does this building look like on the outside?

Whew! That is a relief. I would like them to be in June as that gives me the warm months to grow them.
I look forward to your PM so we can get you going on incubating and fine tuning those skills needed for successful turkey egg hatches.
I did not know turkeys laid eggs this time of year. Interesting. I really need to start studying up more on them but it is early and I don't want to forget all I learn before I have the hands on experience to put with it.
Have you eaten turkey eggs? What is their taste like?

We take Roxy down to the barn on a flexi lead and she will run at the chickens and ducks but doesn't try to bite them. If one chicken stands still she will walk up to it and sniff it all over. I have a few brave hens that think a small dog is funny and can't be worse than the big white cow that runs among them sometimes. Jolie has no concern for stepping or tripping on the chickens or ducks. Other birds are scared of Roxy though because she is so small. I figure they think she looks like a weasel. She does not bark at them but she likes to run after them. Same with the cats, she just wants something to run after but she does not try to bite them. Roxy just can't stand the crowing in the house but they do it very little, although a hormonal teenager yells about it when they do. I would not put it past her to snap at the little chicks like they were toys though. The d'Uccles are a good size now so I am not worried about anything except chasing.
