UPDATE

Well, Dr. Ogburn at Sunset Animal Clinic just called me. The laboratory called her today to review what they saw so far.

And things just get more bizzare...

The autopsy went well. The bird was in decent condition (except for being underweight) She said that the organs and such all were relatively normal. Well, they got to the birds face last and obviously it was extremely fluid filled. When they got to the brain the brain was grossly swollen and even around the brain and there was deterioration of the brain occuring!!!!! The lab has NO idea what it is. They've never seen this before.

My grandma jokingly said watch this be a new disease and it gets named after me. (Thanks a lot Grandma...haha.) And my coworker says it sounds like a new rabies strain....avian rabies. (Not comforting either...jeez)

Well, the lab said no signs of respiratory issues. Dr. Ogburn said that was surprising because one would think so. But, I noted that the bird literally started acting lethargic yesterday afternoon (2 nights ago) and that night the swelling began. She was dead in less than 24 hours (Yesterday). No respiratory issues at all beforehand.

I will update again when they find out more. They took tissue samples and are running those.

Wow! This sounds just like what they always told me when I sent a bird in to be necropsied at Clemson. I even sent birds that were alive but on deaths door so they could get the freshest samples. They said it could be this or it could be that but there was nothing conclusive on what it was. I gave up having faith in them and now deal with it when someone gets run down.
There have been a few that had swollen heads in the past but the wattles did not get it, only around the eyes and not back on the head. I figured Coryza but the lab didn't confirm it.
Remember another one, Lauren Roach?, had one to die and we thought maybe swollen head disease, among other guesses. But that was just a guess and nothing was confirmed with hers either, I don't believe.

I am glad you had your bird tested for diseases and necropsied. It helps you to see what it is not. I hope none of your others ever get the same symptoms or have any problems what so ever. May this be the only one you have had with illness and forever more your flock be strong!!!

Well maybe it will be different for me considering the lab is corresponding with Sunset on the matter. I want to know what is happening. I have crele oegbs supposed to be shipped a week from Monday. and I must have them...lol

I sent mine through a vet. He buys eggs from me....or rather I trade eggs for questions answered. A game he is not fond of! I tried to deal with Clemson one time by myself but they treated me like an idiot so I went through my friend and though he doesn't care for chickens he does not mind being the liaison. We have worked together more than 20 years now. He liked it much better when I raised and showed dogs. More in his field. But it does help to go through a vet to get stuff answered. It just wasn't anything they seemed to be able to answer. At first I thought it was because they were already dead so later, when one started acting sick I immediately had it necropsied so we may be able to find an answer. All these years later I have just learned to be more careful who I buy from and how to keep them as healthy as possible but I can't avoid things that wild migrating birds bring in either.

A little while back someone on here asked me about my BB Red hen - sorry, but I can't remember who it was. If you're still looking for some hens I have a friend who has 2 she is wanting to sell. Just let me know who you are and I'll get you her contact info.

It was me! I'd love to get her info!

Well, I think I need to be careful what I comment on, on facebook. People can get kind of worked up. FB might be easier to navigate but some people are just not as nice as on here. Now I am not talking about any of us or our comments. I guess if people do not know you they might take you wrong too.

On another note, we are taking some guineas to be processed Monday. We are going to pay $5 a bird but to me that will be worth it. I just do not have the time to get up to my elbows with bird guts and have my daughter need her diaper changed or ask for a snack. We are getting rid of most if not all of the light buffs--I can't hardly sell them down here and I really can not afford to raise these little pigs and give them away. Not to mention we have plenty of the other colors running around to take care of business.

I have noticed I have a harder time understanding what some people are saying on FB. I sometimes just do not respond because I can't figure out what the heck they are saying or trying to get at. I try to be helpful but I think some people take that wrong, too. Must be the way it is said or interpreted. Although we do seem to do fine on here.

Be sure to tell us how they taste!
Oh yeah, I talked to someone about the Guinea meat at Live Oaks in Woodruff and they said it was a different kind of Guinea besides what we have running around the farms. I wonder if that means the French Guineas? They didn't know what kind but knew they had been told that the farm Guineas were not what was sold there.
