I am just now starting out on here. My mom (dixiebeast) and my grandma (patsy) got me thinking about joining, so i did. I myself dont actually own any of the chickens.. but i have a horse, our new chicken dog that we got a couple weeks ago, and a cat. I do want phoenix's so if anyone has any or comes across any.. please let me know! :)

Welcome!

Thanks so much for all the info amy! I guess I'll probably just try to get me a silkie and/or cochin sometime this spring. Have you ever kept chickens with ducks? I'm thinking about putting whoever I get to be a broody with my call ducks.

Typically the hens have to feel broody before they will help you out but I swear, if I miss a day with my pet quality Silkies and leave eggs in the nest then the next day they are stuck like glue!
And of course, my nicest Cochin hens like to be broody instead of laying and they will hatch and raise them well for me. They go broody after about 5 eggs, if that many!
But I also have a gold laced Wyandotte that has gone broody 5 times in one year and last year I gave her duck eggs and she hatched and raised them.
And right now I have a Langshans/JG hen that has been on the nest for the past 4 weeks. I won't give her anything because those girls usually step on the chicks and kill them but she has been holding fast to the nest and gets quite angry when I throw her off.
My Muscovy ducks love to go broody and will lay about 10-15 eggs and want to sit. I have a girl now that is laying and I just broke her of being broody back in Nov. Rotten creature.
d'Anvers and d'Uccles like to go broody and will raise the young well but they are small and can't fit as many eggs. My PQ Serama loves to sit and raise but only goes broody about twice a year.
There's you some answers! Hope it helps. You know I like to write a book when I reply!

Want my 3 cents? LOL!

I let a broody silkie hatch out 2 call ducks last spring. She did well with them! I have hatched ducks both ways - broody & incubator.

I like keeping ducks with chicks while they are babies and as long as they are about the same size. Ducks help keep chicken butts clean! The ducklings are always preening the chicks :)

I'll take your 3 cents anytime! Lol!! I'm really excited about hatching from my call duck pair this spring...and nervous! They're so dang cute. Not SQ but they are good breeder quality...so I really want to get some adorable ducklings from them! That's funny that the ducklings clean the chicks! ahh I can't wait! I'm definately going to get me a couple silkies or cochins but I'm also starting to consider a new incubator the more I think about it...

Welcome Glad to have you, but there are some here who are great at chicken math, so be warned!

Of course you know that already.

Call ducks have done MUCH better for me under a broody. They are hard to hatch sometimes. Other ducks do fine in incubator. :)
