I have my pigeons and chickens together. My pigeons live with my seramas and BB Red hen.
Also meant to say that my blue orps are laying well and I'm selling the eggs. I only have two hens, so I get 2 eggs a day. They are nice eggs and I'm having good hatches. I'll be having some juvenile orps for sale too but I think they'll all be splash.

When we got home yesterday the one was droopy and today he died. I am very bummed with my peacock adventure. I have wormed them and even gave them some acorn squash last week when they seemed to not be eating well. I guess it could be blackhead but I see no signs in the droppings that make me think it is. I think my peacock adventure may be about over...."![]()
Heidi, are these adult peacocks or babies? The first year of a peachick's life is very difficult. They are like guineas in that they're fragile when young and very hardy birds as adults. An old timer once taught me the best way to raise peachicks is with a broody hen (he used bantams) and you leave them with the hen for the whole first year. She takes care of them, keeps them warm and shows them how to stay safe and find food. I have found this to be true. The only peachicks that I've had survive were raised with a broody hen. She's still taking care of them, and they're half grown. It's funny to see these 6 long legged peachicks huddling up around one buff orp hen everynight. But she's also teaching them to sleep in the coop which I'm very happy about. Don't feel bad, peachicks are hard to raise.
Joy, thank you for saying this as I feel so bad about this bird and I really do not know if the other will make it as it seems lost without this bird. I think that is why it has not been eating much. I am thinking I might put a guinea in with him and see if he will hang out with it. I think if I ever do the peacock thing again I will use a hen or maybe a peahen. I am just really bummed.
Whew! I'm tired! The show was fun but it was 5 hours each way. Colin got to see his white crested black polish. There were only two large ones being shown and one was a boy who was posing for pictures. They are hilarious looking birds. He really wanted to buy some yesterday but the only ones for sale for bantams and we've already ordered some standard size chicks. It's fun to see him so excited. He just came in and got my Standard of Perfection and he's studying it. I did pick up 11 silkies from Bobbi Porto that I had ordered a month ago but other than that, I can home empty handed. It was really cool to see all the birds and learn about judging. I had never seen anyone's birds but mine so it was great to see the Marans and Ameraucanas and of course the Silkies! I should have shown my Ameraucanas. There were only 5. I was really surprised. And only one lavender and mine are much nicer. Got to meet a lot of the people on here which is always fun! I missed Heidi though. I had random people coming up to me and saying "Aren't you Susanne, the new SC silkie rep?" That was funny. And when I went up to a lady selling silkies and introduced myself to which she replied, "I know. I've been to your farm. That's where I got my silkies." Oops!
Apparently I gave her a good start because she had some nice ones!![]()
Sorry to hear about all the dead birds. I went out this morning to check on my new little silkies and two were out in the rain, just sitting there soaked and shivering. I stuck them in with the babies. I need to go check.
My new coops are for Colin's polish, my cream legbars who will need space soon, the turkeys I've ordered, my gray silkies and my columbian silkies. And... something else. Can't think of it. I'm still working on getting the Jubilee's but since we're building the house, Cole thinks I need to wait.Which maybe I should do because I have picked out some expensive lighting from Restoration Hardware for the house and I really need to talk him into those too!![]()
I'm so sorry! There were two male peacocks at the show yesterday for sale and I was so tempted. They really are beautiful. I bet a guinea would be good company. At least it would talk a lot!
