South Carolina

Hey...I live in a very rural area between Columbia and Greenville!!!! I am in Cross Hill near Lake Greenwood!!

Wow thank you to everyone who posted.. As I said before I am very new to this..so new in fact that our first chicks will arrive tomorrow. We've set up a really nice brooder area for the chicks and have turned on the heat lamps already to get ready for the chicks to arrive. We have 6 Rhode Island Reds that we're picking up tomorrow from the local feed store then ordering a couple more to get us up and running on our begining "flock??"not sure if that's the appropriate term for a group of chickens. We wanted to have all Dominiques but the local feed store doesn't have them in stock so we're ordering them. I personally have No experience with chickens. However, my hubby has been around chickens his entire life. His grandfather raised chickens long before hubby was born and up until he died 3 years ago. Hubby has been begging and pleading with me to get some chickens and I've always turned him down until recently. We live in the upstate area of South Carolina between Columbia and Greenville. We live in a very rural/country setting that allows for us to keep chickens. I'm really excited about this new adventure in our lives, but feeling quite inadequate due to the lack of information that I personally know. I've been reading around online (mostly here) and have learned a huge amount of info about baby chicks and what to feed them, setting up their brooding area etc.. that's about all I can think of at this point..but I will be sure to ask questions here if I need to. Thank you all again for a warm welcome and offers to help answer questions.

When I decided to join my friend, who is also my coworker and neighbor in her chicken adventure last year, we neither one knew anything about chickens. I became the research person and learned everything we needed to know between this website's Learning Center section, the forum sections, the people in this section (which are the best!) and the book, Raising Chickens for Dummies. We have had so much fun. Chicken math is a dangerous disease you will hear a lot about. So far, we still just have seven, but we will add a few more this Spring. Due to lack of space, we will never have a large number, but that's okay. It keeps me out of trouble and keeps me from buying an incubator. That would cause some huge chicken math issues!

BOW-CHIKA-WOW-WOW....We have "action"

To all the new folks joining us on here. This is the best thread on BYC and you will get plenty of great, diversified answers to your questions because what works for one does not always work for another.

Now, armed with another cup of coffee, I am back out the door again. Have a great day!

That's the way it was with my DH .... his grandfather used to incubate eggs in a 5 gallon bucket - Paw Paw P even caponized some of his roosters.
My DD has always been around chickens- other than the few years we did not have any. She is 23 - and even has a scar where a rooster flogged her once on her knee or shin.

Have you found the list of Acronyms people use on the forums (shorthand for the breeds for example?)
