House fire in upstate SC was my SIL's dad. It is going to be rough on her...his first reaction was to call her - she & her son called 911....both of them tried to get him out but smoke was so bad they could not find him, even though they could hear him..... her son did have to stay in hospital overnight....please keep them all in your prayers.

I some how had missed this and saw others responding to it....I am so sorry and will keep them in my prayers....

Had a good Dominique hatch Saturday and Sunday. I should be set with Doms if I can keep them healthy!

Amy, I got 5 chick out of my 7 Marans eggs--I am considering that pretty good odds. One is a huge blue and is having some trouble getting his legs under him. I have him wrapped in a sock in the hope that trying to push out will help with the legs. He got stuck in the eggs crate with his legs in front of him over night and now just can't get them back under himself. Any other suggestions? Usually when they get in the egg crate the opposite happens as they push themselves out but his legs got stuck out in front of him. He's so big and round it is not helping either. Your bird's eggs develop fat chicks!

That's probably because Amy has some well-cared-for fat round birds!!!

Patsy, how's pretty baby girl?

Snowy (haha her new name since she is SOOOO snowy white and teal/blue and and awesome!!!) is actually inside right now with a very young red frizzle roo I fell in love with at Amy's that same day! Have to get something for SO because he does help and LOVES red-heads!

Will be his eye-candy and it worked! he already helped with some coop repairs!) I am afraid to put her outside with the others since all I have out there I can put her with is that lonely white Slikie hen and roo I got her to go with but remember there is that black Silkie roo in with them that is a bully! I am working on a new place for him so I can have the whites together!!! OH...and I just set the eggs you let me get because tonight was lockdown for what I had set! Candled EVERY ONE and ALLL look good!!! Hoping this third time I improve my average hatch rate!!! Snowy is WONDERFUL! Thank-you sooo much! I really hate we were short on time and couldn't talk hours longer! SO made me a nice candler tonight and as we moved eggs over to lockdown and set the others we looked at everything and all seem OK!!! Thanks also for showing me how you candle and the mix of development you had going on helped me understand more!!!

I need to work on more space here for protection for chickens! Have some predator upsetting and getting my one quad flock of game mix birds' eggs that live free

That is terrific! My Marans are big birds. Ask Patsy about Albert! LOL
Remember I breed for the true use of the breed, not some mediocre meat bird like they breed for showing. I want my birds to be used for what they were originally intended and meat and eggs is what Marans are bred for.
Not to mention, the black coppers are looking more and more like the wheatens so I breed a lot of the extra copper out of mine. They have just enough to call them coppers and do not get more each year.
You will really enjoy the temperament on mine, too. I am slowly changing my free range flock over to Marans as my older free range birds stop laying. I love all the different breeds but find many are not so useful as they are just pretty. Pretty is as pretty does.
