Depending on the breed he could start courting ladies as young as 2 months. My bantam Cochin roos are almost born ready! My Golden Cuckoo Marans fellas can be 6 months old before it hits them like a box of rocks! I have bred bantam roos as young as 6 mths and waiting over a year for my large roos like my Langshans fella. I think he was 18 mths before he was ever put into breeding.
Layer isn't the greatest for them but mine nibble through the mash. I feed a lot of whole grains so they have a better option. I offer scratch as a snack on some days but it isn't very balanced or has a variety of nutritional needs so he is picking up some of the dietary needs in another food, especially if not free ranged and even so, this time of year lacks a lot of choices.
Layer as a complete diet could cause harm to some of his organs. I am not sure if we have ever had a poll on who has the oldest rooster. Be neat to know and what his diet has been.
Try yours on a 5 grain scratch mixed with whole barley, rolled oats, I add extra BOSS and maybe some sorgham. Some of this is kinda expensive for my wallet so I try to find stuff on sale and what is in season to help me out.
I am not sure if I have the most chickens or not. I stopped counting when I hit 600 again.
Yancy, we have growing Jersey Giants. I candled a few of them and they look good.
Got more eggs coming in a few days so guess who fired the Sportsman back up?
