Did you know he passed away December 30th?

Local News Article

No, Kim, I didn't know that. But, I did know,of course, that he was getting quite elderly.
He did a LOT to keep the Textile Industry going in the Carolinas.

He was also in the top few hundred wealthiest people in the USA.

Depending on the breed he could start courting ladies as young as 2 months. My bantam Cochin roos are almost born ready! My Golden Cuckoo Marans fellas can be 6 months old before it hits them like a box of rocks! I have bred bantam roos as young as 6 mths and waiting over a year for my large roos like my Langshans fella. I think he was 18 mths before he was ever put into breeding.

Layer isn't the greatest for them but mine nibble through the mash. I feed a lot of whole grains so they have a better option. I offer scratch as a snack on some days but it isn't very balanced or has a variety of nutritional needs so he is picking up some of the dietary needs in another food, especially if not free ranged and even so, this time of year lacks a lot of choices.
Layer as a complete diet could cause harm to some of his organs. I am not sure if we have ever had a poll on who has the oldest rooster. Be neat to know and what his diet has been.

Try yours on a 5 grain scratch mixed with whole barley, rolled oats, I add extra BOSS and maybe some sorgham. Some of this is kinda expensive for my wallet so I try to find stuff on sale and what is in season to help me out.

I am not sure if I have the most chickens or not. I stopped counting when I hit 600 again.

Yancy, we have growing Jersey Giants. I candled a few of them and they look good.
Got more eggs coming in a few days so guess who fired the Sportsman back up?

Mine won't eat anything other than what their ladies eat unless I have them penned separately. When penned together for breeding, they all eat the same thing, DH says it is laying mash. I really need to get some more grain.

Hahaha, I feel much better about my 'numbers' now.
I just told Tom 'extra roosters, youngsters, and old hens that no longer lay regularly' DON'T count toward the total number --- he didn't buy that one.
Got to move the new ducklings (Swedish, Ancona, Pekin) out of the hatcher this morning, clean it quick and move the Day 19 eggs (I'm a day late) down.

I am going to the Morganton show and pick up another Cochin from Judy Gantt so I need to start through my pens and getting spring breeding schedules organized.

I have plans for another breeder barn but with the weather I can't seem to get the truck, my DH and my neighbor lined up to get the wood and put up the frame. Once that is done I can finish it on my own. I am woman! Hear me roar!

Yeah, not a roar, huh?

So there are a few shows coming up close in NC and there is the SC swap thread going, too. Everyone know about those?
