Amy: Do you just buy the Niacin and Vit E in tablet form and crush it then add it to the water? I'm going to definately try this for my next hatch. (Since obviously my first one this year was an epic failure!) Thanks so much for the info!

Forgot to tell y'all that my Blue Orp Roo decided to attack me yesterday! He has always been really sweet and never acted aggressive towards me. I let them out to free range when I got home from work and as I was walking away I felt a thud at the back of my legs. Big ole jerk had come running at me when I wasn't looking. I stood my ground and just kept kicking him back away from me til he gave up and walked away. I could only laugh at him after the past few days I've been having

I've been AWOL the last few days. I'm planning next years curriculum. Major changes for the first time and lots to think through and research.

My hatching is not going well. I am down to 4 out of 13. These 4 are energetic in the shell. We will be at day 9 tomorrow. I try to cull the nonviable ones at night so it doesn't effect the kids so much. I really hope I have more than 1 or 2 make it. That would be a lonely brooder! They are bantam partridge wyandottes.

Hope all are well. We are visiting the NC Zoo tomorrow for a field trip.

Good Morning. My chicks will be 7 weeks on Monday. I am amazed at how quickly they have grown and how beautiful they are. I have a BLRW and she is the sweetest bird. Is this typical temperament for a BLRW? If so I would really like a few more. Does anyone have recommendations for local breeders in the state? I would rather drive(2-3 hr drive is fine) to pick them up then have them shipped. Thanks for the help!

I buy Niacin in capsule form. It is easier to pull apart and dissolve in the water. Vit E comes in gel capsules, too so I snip the end and squeeze a bit into water containers.
My Niacin is 500 mgs and can do 8 gallons of water but I usually do only 5 gallons with one capsule. I do 5 gallons with the Vit E capsules, too. That gel makes quite a mess on the bucket so I try to use the same one and pour into drinking waters every day after mixing.
I have been doing Vit E only about 2-3 times a week on chicks but my breeders are every day. Good hatches start with good nutrition on the parents. I can tell a big difference on what I hatch from my birds and what hatches from other people's eggs, even local pick up. My BLRW and SLW are giving me a 99% hatch rate and the ones that do not hatch are always developed, just do not hatch. Same with Marans and the Guineas.....oh, well, Guineas just hatch like mad anyhow. LOL

I find mine are great calm sweeties also...there are several great breeders on here..WestknollAmy (.Westknollfarm.com online)...Farmerjohn(countylinefarms in Trenton online)...phoneman...I have birds from Farmer John and WestknollAmy...My hens are from John and my roo is origionally from Westknoll(but got from a mutual friend) .I have gorgeous splash BLRW hens and a great Foley line dark blue roo! I have my very first eggs(not laid but finally set) set now and I plan on breeding also but would be a wait to get from me!!! Hope one of these folks can help you soon!!

Yes, the BLRW are very sweet birds. I love my SLW, too. These make excellent pets and mine have proven to be good layers. My roos are not aggressive and the hens, though not ones to be cuddles (like my Cochins or d'Uccles) are tolerate of me touching them and will definitely eat from my hand.

I believe I am going to switch roos in my pens and work on lavender laced Wyandottes. I have seen some projects going on and think they may be the new wave. I found them to be really gorgeous but have got to find time to research that genetic layout. Too much to do and no time to do it all in!

And Sam, I really wanted to make it tomorrow but the checks from the Insurance company came in the mail and we are going to try and finish cleaning up tomorrow and make a run to Lowes for more roofing to get the coops put back together. It rained the other day and flooded one of my duck coops. They have to have a new roof. Not to mention my poor other birds that only have part of the roof where we put that canvas on when you guys came up and helped.
I do not have any appointments for tomorrow lined up but Sunday is another matter. Always too busy on the farm!

Just stopped in to say hi as I seem to not have time for that much lately. So many chicks to take care of and a 3 year old daughter going through the terrible 3's. Some days I think the chickens need to go....and the dog....and that rabbit that just came to live with us....Oh, I really do not think about it too long!

I also wanted to mention for people that the Vitamins & Electrolytes (Durvet) you can get from Tractor Supply have a pretty good amount of Niacin and Vitamin E in it plus other good things. I try to give my birds some at least when the weather gets nasty(like right now). I uses only enough to turn the water a light yellow--as I was told, the color of weak lemonade!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! We finally have a green metal roof on the house and although the porch project is not finished we are taking the weekend off working on it to do something else!
