Hello! Is anyone going to the Barnwell show tomorrow? We just found out about it and are so excited to attend. It will be our first one! My 11 year old daughter is going to show a couple of the birds she got from Red Bug Poultry, we are excited to see how she does.

I did. I couldn't find my camera so I took Greg's ipad and now I am trying to get them posted! We got several ribbons (the judges were so nice in the jr. category, gave Sophie lots of good feedback.) Everyone at the show was very nice! Also, in a startling new development - we now have Japanese Bantams. It seemed like there were so many kids exhibiting in the Jr. section with bantams, only a few in large fowl like Sophie. I mentioned I was wishing to find some kind of bantam to show that my smaller girls could handle since we had no luck finding silkies and the competition was pretty strong in silkies. They pointed out a gentleman with a Gold pickup to me (I sure wish I had gotten his name) and told me that he might have a few birds for sale - and that he was always winning everything in sight. His rooster did win best clean legged of the show. Anyway, we ended up coming home with two tiny roosters and three tiny hens - each of them laid a tiny egg for us when we got home! So one rooster and two hens went into our empty and beautiful silkie coop for Norah and the other roo and hen are in a rabbit hutch at the moment and were gifted to Maddie who is 4. She has named them Ariel and Prince Eric. Exciting times!

Just a quick question: What's the best breed to start off with?

We have been thinking about starting out with 15-20 chickens;
Buff Orpington = 5 hens 1 rooster
White Leghorn = 3 hens (for white eggs)
Buff Minorcas = 3 hens
Australorp = 5 hens 1 rooster.

We want the Leghorns for the white eggs. And the rest for reproduction and for broodiness. Is this a good way to go or not? Should I start out smaller with a different breed?

I have the other SC threads linked to my email so I know when someone posts on them. I seldom come in here and look to see if a new one started.
Most of you already know me from posting in SC threads already. Or from seeing I may have something for sale.

I'm thinking, since so many people ask me about buying my laying pullets when they come to buy eggs, that I should just go ahead and order about 50 sex links from Central hatchery and raise them. I can always sell the eggs if no one wants to buy sex links since that is what I do here on the farm anyhow. But I was just thinking that next winter when everyone is asking about those laying pullets, I could sell the sex links.
I have sold too many pullets this spring and am worried I won't have enough producing hens this summer when I am collecting for hatching.
Central hatchery has really good prices but I know nothing about them.

ok dumb question... what are sex links? Also, hoping to get chickens this weekend (all we need up it the chicken wire which will be done during the week) So, I hope you have a couple Buff Orps still

So not a dumb question... sex link chickens have an identifying characteristic so you can tell female from male right away when they are chicks. Like a dot on the head for girls but not boys or something like that. Someone more knowledgeable than me can probably tell you exactly what the specific identifier is for the red ones (there are black ones too) but I'm not that good.

Awwww! Sounds like you all had a blast. Wish I could have gone but the peafowls won't get done with me running around the countryside so my dear friends came once again and helped us put the roof beams on the shed. We all went last time but keeping in the spirit of going last time we had a picnic for lunch. My DH grilled hotdogs for us. Always lots of fun when we get together.

We had a great day, and met your friend Kimberly who was there with her beautiful silkies and her daughter and nieces. More addiction is right! Now we have more pens to build again!
