Amy - I hope you feel better soon. It's awful to be sick when the weather is nice (and you have lots of things you could be doing).

I bought some brahma chicks from TSC this year and they're doing great. They are several weeks old and have graduated to an outside brooder box. BUT, I was there the day they came in and bought them right away.

Thanks Joy. I am much better. It is amazing that I never get sick and then one day...BANG! A little virus or some bug brings me low.

My GLW presented me with a duckling yesterday! The other was trying to hatch but I had to up the humidity under the hen so I hope it makes it. I am terrible at having to help one out. All thumbs, I am!

I haven't any idea what breed it may be but I am guessing Pekin. It was one of those huge white eggs and the duckling is yellow and absolutely, totally adorable!!! I had to really restrain from covering it's cute self with kisses!

I have photos of those shipping boxes that i will post later this morning. I now have 4 and she is bringing me more next week when she picks up chicks. I will get 2 more of the big ones and 2 small ones.

Sooooo very handsome! Look at those lovely boys! I have one beautiful brother of theirs growing up that I am keeping an eye on. I was so hoping to have pullets and I am sure I have a black one around here in one of these brooders....

but the blue boy is very handsome and I am wondering where I will squeeze him in.
My SLW roo, Jerry, is back home but with his lower beak poked out because he was taken from 15 hens. I told him I would let him out with the free range flock soon. I just need to be able to watch them. Adonis is not a forgiving roo when it comes to his hens.

So now where to put the blue JG roo.... .......need more pens......

I sure hope my chicks like their bath! I completely forgot to bring them back into the coop before the rain started! They have a shelter but when I just looked at them, they are out in the open pecking the grass!! Poof the duck was happiest of course!

Forced some of the silkies to let me hold them yesterday

Ever since they were put into the coop they haven't wanted anything to do with us! They settled down once in my hands. I need to get some meal worms . . .

Chances of storms today through Thursday. I just want rain

The wind and all that stuff can stay away from our place.

Here is a photo of the large shipping crates. The one standing on end is almost 5', just enough for me to not be able to use plywood cut in half but I will be able to get overhang out of it. It is a little over 4' wide and only 2 1/2 ft deep.

I plan to stand the d'Uccles condos up on end like this and have a top coop and one on the bottom. Probably paint one of these light purple.

The other crate is laying on it's open end but you can see the thick skids it has on it's bottom. I am going to lay the duck coops down on the skids, build the top up another 6" with some extra 2x6x14 boards I have on hand so they won't bump their noggins. I will screen around some opening up there for ventilation plus probably make a few windows.
Here is the only thing I have done to the duck ones so far. Not much. Lovely rain.

I've stalked here for quite a while, so wanted to make my grand debut. We are from Chapin...a small community outside of Columbia where we live on 2 acres. I have farming in my blood (literally...my grandmother talks about how they were self sustaining back before it was cool..ha!). We grow a huge garden every year (enough to feed us all year long), but my husband and I had never tried our hand with any animals (other than dogs or cats). We also wanted something fun for the children. We decided to jump headfirst into the chicken scene. My husband built a coop (reworked our lavish dog pen) to house 15-20 chickens for me. He really loves me. We got 11 chicks from Nadine (Amy, who was a blessed soul for answering my chicken questions for over a year and then picking out the perfect brood for me) about 4 weeks ago. We had 2 casualties (we think shavings related), but are still the proud owners of 8 ladies and their lovely BLRW Roo. I just wanted to say hello to the South Carolinians. I've enjoyed reading this string for quite a while.
