That is the way Kimberly does it. I did it once and then bought a turner!

Yepp. lol
Since getting the bigger incubator, I now have 3 turners.....but still prefer to put some on the rack without the turner -
hu.gif
am handturning some turkeys & some bcms......some of each are in turner too. I have some eggs in the stryo bator again.......being hand turned- - doesn't take long unless I have a bunch to do - like 4 or 5 dozen

I just turn whenever I walk past to go to the bathroom

Yeah......I did the handturning thing for one season, don't do that anymore. Those turners are well worth the money.

I talk to the eggs most times while I am turning.

all newbies!

Now back to my list of stuff to do today. I want to get caught up online, because our cable was down after a storm hit somewhere around here yesterday. However, I was not home most of the day & am already behind on my list of stuff to do...My spring cleaning should have been done in March.

Hope everyone stays safe in storms if they come thru today.

I hand-turn all my eggs, but I hatch in smaller batches, I guess...and, I only turn twice a day, so it's not too bad!

So glad you could join us here, Brandy!
I hope the kids are still enjoying the chicks. Do they help feed and water them? It is amazing how quickly they grow. Kids and chicks!!

When you get a chance post some photos of the coop and run and the brooder where you are raising the babies. We all like to ooohhhh and aaaahhhh over everybody's creations.

And yes, I blame shavings for death in young chicks. They don't always die and sometimes people have very good luck with them but I get so much better live rates when I don't use shavings. Nasty mess to clean every day but worth it for me to have live chicks.
Brandy has not lost anymore since getting them off shavings and someone else on here (name escapes me now) was losing chicks on shavings. I say better safe than sorry.

Okay, peoples, hunker down! We have a big storm headed our way. If we are lucky it will dissipate before reaching us but I am not holding my breath. I had an empty dog kennel so Jolie is locked up and ready for the storm. The windows and doors are closed to the shed and brooder room. All food picked up and put where it is dry.
Unfortunately, GLW hen wants to take her 2 new babies (ducklings) outside to eat some grass and I won't let her due to the storm coming. I had to cut then some grass and shred it in the food dish. GLW, named Unihorn, is a bit miffed. I suppose she figures ducklings would not mind getting wet.

My new Saxony ducklings are all well and happy in their new brooder. Talk about creative! I have brooder tubs everywhere in the brooder room and now can hardly get to the horse grain since I had to use that big barrel to set the duckling brooder on. I didn't realize that until I had them all set up and then needed to feed the horse!

There is another 6' brooder on the left and the floor was full of chicks. I also have 2 more plastic tubs to the right that can not be seen. One has Porcelain d'Uccles in it and the other the ducklings. Amy Nadine is tired.

Nadine-

I really like those 6' plastic tubs...Can you tell me where you got them? I have only found the "dinky" 32" long tubs, 105 Qt. size

Thanks!

Yes, Josie's (our 4 year old) job is to take care of the smaller chicks in the brooder (the Speckled Sussex, Easter Egger, Mottled Java, and the Sex link). She cleans their water twice daily, changes their bedding daily, and makes sure they have some treats too. She's in love with the babies and I love watching her interact with them. I leave the coop stuff for myself. The roo pecks if you mess with his hens, and he's just started coming around to me, so I'll ease the kids into him once he calms down a bit...and he has been calming down. We're all getting used to each other. The first couple of days, he was quite the little booger. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was taking care of his girls.

We are headed to Rushlane Poultry soon to get some Brahmas (one of the chicks we lost was a Buff Brahma and that was my husband's favorite, so I figure the least I could do was to replace his favorite chick since he did so much work for me with the coop). He has a Splash and a Dark Brahma that he's holding for us, I believe. I think we may get a Maran while we are there also....I love the dark eggs. And then who knows what else we may come home with. I've found its easy to become obsessed with the chickens. Our coop/run was made to hold 20 hens but my husband said he would kill me if I started out with that many. I will try to hold myself back with just an additional 4 or 5 from Rushlane (which would give me a total of 12 ladies and the roo). We're also going to get 6 or 8 more ducklings to raise for my MIL's pond from Rushlane. We released 6 Pekins (12 weeks old) onto the pond last week.

I'll definitely post picture of the coop (its quite spectacular handiwork by the husband), but I don't think I have enough posts on here to do that yet. I'm a talker though (as you can probably tell from this post), so I'll get there
