South Carolina

Today we went by the Lancaster TSC and spotted 2 chick that was bleeding from teh tail feathers from other chicks pecking at them. They let us have them when we pointed it out. Is there anything we can do to help them heal up?

Man, since I got into this (this past March), I don't need anything else to steal my soul!!!! But I have a craving for those Blue tipped Red Wyandottes (and the gold wing for that matter)!!! To me they're beautiful! I can't believe I'm saying that over a dang chicken....I usually reserve that for women...but since I want hens, I guess it's all the same!

The only other critter I'm thinking about is Guineas. I'm not a fan of their noise, but I want to get rid of ticks as I suffer from at least 20 tick bites at the moment. I'm beginning to worry about Lymes disease since I've been bitten by so many over the past 7 years that I moved into South Carolina. I've got several of the symtoms that I researched on Google today. I hear guineas are the ultimate in tick removal...and they seem to be more adept at avoising dangers like my Jack Russels (I've got 5 of the little buggers). I'm starting to feel like a hoarder...and I'm hoping you don't see me on t.v. soon! I've got 8 (what I think are barred rocks) from TSC...7 appear to be hens and one I know is a rooster. He may be my only rooster out of 20 birds so I think I want to keep him with all the hens I have. I'll be glad to trade some of these super healthy barred rocks for some guinea keets. If that doesn't materialize...I'll offer up some of the barred rock hens to those who are interested here in South Carolina. I expected some to die off, but I've not lost a single bird out of 22 so I'm over crowded for a 4'X8' coop. I like variety and only got started in this because we now have a TSC in Sumter (opened this Spring). Yep, I'm a sucker and a chicken lover now...but I would rather someone have some of my girls than crowd them into mysery. The barred rocks are almost 4-weeks old. I have a few RIR (I think that I'll offer up as well. I have a nice flock, but I want variey without getting into bantams or ornamentals. I like the look of the BWRW, and the GLW...I can't rule out an Ameraucana or two either! I'm already thinking about building another coop! I'e got one Cochin...another TSC surprise...I want to give her up (even though I like her since she's different), but my wife and kids would kill me. My daughter has named the Cochin "trousers" since it looks to her like it has on a pair of pants! Geez...I wish I never got started in this...I found a new love! Yep, I've been suckered in...

Put some Blu-Coat or Rooster Booster Pick-No more cover up lotion on the pecked area. You may want to isolate the birds for a while as well, until they get healthy enough to either run for cover or protect themselves. Nice save...I'm sure they'll do fine with your overwatch!

I hope today is as great as yesterday!
I got the roof on the duck coop and one of the end doors. So all I need to finish is the other end door and put the rope on the pop doors and I am done! Oh, wait, gotta get that PVC roofing and put it on the roof. But then I'm done!

Then I get to start on the other one!

I guess I won't get much done today though. Saturdays are usually a big sale day for me and this afternoon I am going to look at a truck to buy. I miss my old truck and got to have another, even if I give up my comfy car. Don't laugh! That car may look crappy but it sits real well. I bet my parents both rolled in their graves when I put a chicken in it the first time. They bought it new and pampered it. I treat it like a farm truck.

Have a good one ya'll. Talk to you tomorrow!

Hi Nadine! We made it home, safe and sound. It was so nice to meet you and see all of your lovely birds. I am making a pound cake tomorrow with fresh duck eggs. It's going to be delicious!

Piper my LGD(she didn't know this was what she signed up for) and a buff orp....the look on piper face
ep.gif
is because the chicken took a biscuit from her mouth and ran off to eat....Piper is trained not to hurt the chickens and the chickens just think Piper is one of the Girls!!!! The odd thing is.. if Piper barks they come running to her and not to hide...not sure if anybody is well trained.
And Bless my little blue roo's heart he tired to show alittle pecking order today...Well the hens put him down and sent him running..actually was very funny(for me and the girls) not for him.

Hope everybody had a great weekend outside!!!! Cause Soon it will be Hot. Take Care !

I called the TSC in Laurens this morning to see if anyone showed up with a rooster to cross on my blue egg layers. . . . .

'John' answered the phone. He told me that a 'couple of people' turned up with chickens but did not stay around. He said that he guessed the chicken swap fizzled out . . . .

I don't know what else they expected, since they did not bother to advertise the swap at all.

I was extremely disgusted with the whole deal. Johnathan had told me that the swap would be on the Saturday before Easter, so I took the day off so I could bring my chickens, somewhere around 40 of them. Then the date got changed to the following Saturday, when I was scheduled to work !

Serves them right as far as I am concerned . . . . .

Maybe when they are trying to organize the fall chicken swap, they will remember how this one turned out, get off their butts and do it right !
