In my experience I can not slip chicks under a Marans and have her accept it. Set up a brooder and take one of the babies from her and give your lonely one a pal. Otherwise you will never hear the end of it.
I always offer food and water right from the start. They often will eat and drink some. Mostly they like to play with food as it is natural for them to always be pecking at something. When underneath mama hen they are pecking at her feathers and feet, each others eyes and the nesting or ground.
Come see me anytime. It is a mad house here most of the time but there is a lot to see. Plan to spend about 2 hours. That is how long most first visits go when we walk around and look at all the birds.
If anyone needs little chicks, I have some buff Orps for sale. They came from Strombergs as I had someone wanting them but then backed out. I ordered pullets so chances are good. They are a week old and I think I have 4 or 5.
I no longer let anyone into my brooder room and soon may not allow tours around the pens. I get more and more visitors that will not control their children. And the other day actually had a grown man that was worse than any kid. He didn't seem mentally challenged but I began to wonder. They will not be allowed on my property again. I do not tolerate such rude and inconsiderate behavior. And then to be such novices (though one tried to tell me he had been big in chickens for many years.
) they had the gall to tell me I didn't know my breeds when I have raised and researched them. I was steaming, I assure you.
OMG the nerve of some people!
You do know your breeds, maybe he doesn't.
I would have to scare kids - even if I had to tell them Langs would eat them
. I would not tolerate them chasing or terrorizing my ducks or chickens. And would speak up to the parents, and if that did not work I would not hesitate to yell at the kid myself.
Maybe you need a sign........ like Unattended and out of control kids will be fed to the ducks.
or Please do not allow children to touch pens nor bother animals. I will not be responsible for missing fingers or pecked eyes.
ETA: I guess some people do not realize that kids and animals together can be asking for trouble.
