South Carolina

Good Morning South Carolina BYC members.

I recently joined the forum and am also in SC. We are new to Chickens, and are finishng up the chicken house. Our 8 week olds are now able to fly up on the stall deviders and break out of the stall they are in. We strted with 9, and lost one to a hawk.

I have been reading this thread and see I am not far from many of you. I am in Gray Court.

We (hubby and I ) have 4 horses, 3 dogs, 8 chickens, and 15 Guineas to be here this week.

Anyone know what happened to spring???

Kris

Wish you were closer, I would feel more comfortable doing that once I actually had someone here to show me.

Gosh, if I did not have so many blasted birds I would take off down there. I love Beaufort! So much history and beauty! Spent most of my summers growing up on Hunting Island, as well as a few other beaches but that was my family's favorite. Still is for me and DH but we do not get to go as much anymore.

I would be glad to show you how to pop the spurs off. It really is simple. And I seldom get much bleeding with it but I usually do it in cold weather, too. Just so flies won't bother them. However, with an energetic breeder I have done it in the spring to keep him off the girls some.

We had Spring! It was about 2 weeks long with gorgeous 70 degree weather back before the cold snap in May. Once you get that Blackberry winter you had better finish up projects because the heat will come down quickly. And it did. June, July, August and sometimes into Sept. we will suffer with the heat and humidity. Even those of us born and raised here can suffer with it.

Hi KrisH!

I am near Simpsonville.

Looks like another scorcher today, huh? Yesterday was awful. My DH spent a few hours in the morning on the tractor, came in, took a shower, and suggested we go furniture shopping because it was too hot to do anything else. You know it's hot if a man says let's go furniture shopping!

I loathe cold weather, so I try not to complain about the heat too much. Last summer a friend of mine was getting a divorce and moving back to Ohio, where her parents live. Her dad was down helping her move. Poor dude looked at me, sweating like a bear, and said, "I don't know how your people stood this heat without air conditioning!" I thought the your people part was kind of amusing. Like it doesn't get hot in Ohio?

We have been working the past several weeks on building the chicken house. It seems we can only work from about 7am to noon. We have gone back out at 7pm a few times but it is to blasted hot. If only we put more effort into building in May. Oh well.

I loved the may weather we had, the 70s and beautiful breezes.

I am glad to see others near us that have chickens, we still cant tell which are pullets and which are roos. NOne are crowing, but I have an idea, but since we dont know anything we are still learning.

Good Morning Krish !

It's always fun to find people close by who have chickens! Now if I can just find some in the southern part of the state.

It was 95 degrees here yesterday. Even at 8 pm it was still 90 in the coop. Phew! I kept going out to check on the chickens and make sure they were alright. Think I am going to get a couple of box fans to set up in there for later this summer.

Got out early myself this morning and got the new coop painted. I know I was supposed to do it before we put the chickens in , but life happens. So now the outside is painted and the inside will not be. We discovered that due to the slant of the roof we will have to lower the roost because our big roo can't get up on it. After a couple of tries I opened the door and put him up there for the night.

My four month old cochin chicks still don't roost, they all puppy pile in a corner. So, I went in there last night and got 8 of the 16 up on the roost then ran out of room. They were still on the roost when I went to let them out this morning. Will have to make a second perch sometime this week.

Nadine, we didn't get to the rooster's pedicure last night, but I am determined to do it today. Husband is afraid to hurt him, and as big as he is, I am not sure I can hold him with one hand. Going to go look on youtube and see if I can find a video showing how to do it with the pliers. We LOVE it here, both my husband and I grew up in large cities so when we got here it was so beautiful and laid back we had to buy a house and stay

We spend some weekends at Hunting island too, or we are out on the boat fishing and watching the dolphins.

I'm close to Reidville, but I grew up in Woodruff/Enoree area. I still go to church at Antioch Baptist on Hwy. 221 toward Enoree. I'll be there tonight - VBS, boy am I bushed today! I have friends who live in the Gray Court area and kids that I know in school there.

I only have two 6-week-old pet chicks that we adopted from a K5 hatching (she hatched 26 out of 29 this year). We have a roo and a pullet. I want to add another pullet or two, just so I'll get my repayment in eggs for all of this TLC they're getting. They have graduated from their brooder to a small chicken "kennel" in the garage. They have enough space to be crazy and it's small enough for them to make each other nuts. We got to get moving on the coop project. We are planning a 10 day trip around the 4th and since someone will be coming by to check on our animals, I'm not moving them out in this heat until we are back home to keep an eye on them.
