South Carolina

We have removed several posts in the spirit of harmony for the SC thread. To summarize what I said previously in the warning to "play nice", every person must decide what to do with their own flocks. Seems to me that no one was condemning anyone else when they made the call to euthanize their own sick animals. That's a personal decision and not a slap in the face to someone else who may not choose that course of action. In any case, this thread is not for discussing chicken diseases. We have a section of the forum just for that purpose, so we are requesting you South Carolinians get back to discussing what you have in common. Carry on.

Thanks Cynth!

And yes, our d'uccle babies are doing great. I'll have to send you a couple of pictures!! I don't know why I haven't thought about that!

Kimberly, so glad to see you back on the list but I hate that you had to go to the ER again! Dang those crazy bugs. You must taste good to them!

Yup. Way too hot outside for me. I feel bad for my birdies but have fans going every where. I fear we all may lose more than we would like before the summer is out. This heat is maddening!
I feel bad for Susanne being away at the beach (well, not that part!) and losing some of her birds. That would be miserable! I am sure when she gets back she will be able to get things back under control from the heat and the hawks.
Hey, Susanne, if you get to read this when are you getting back home?

I do spray the hose into some coops and tractors to try and cool things off but it is 7-8 hours of horrid temps for them. Also gallon jugs frozen in the big freezer go out to the tractored birds from about noon to 6 pm, when they are totally melted. They like that and stand quite close and eventually stand on them as they melt down. Use gallon freezer bags to put them in to go into the freezer so you don't have to scrub all the dirt off and then put them back out the next day with out the bags or put them in the freezer bags when putting them out to the birds and then take them out to put the clean jugs back in the freezer. But I have had chickens to peck holes in the freezer bags so I don't like to do it that way.

The frozen jugs of water is a great idea!! I think I'm gonna go freeze my one jug I have now!! My chickies in the tractor will love me for it I'm sure!

I am SO sorry to hear about your migraines~ my mom suffered with those for many years and she would be in bed for days. My brothers get them from time to time also. I do hope you feel better and they do not persist so frequently

OMG sorry to hear about all that! BUT..... did you see my post about the Velevet Ant??? It's a wingless wasp (yes a wasp) that has some very dangerous venom. It would really be most dangerous to those allergic to bee's! But either way they hurt like hell! I'll post it on here for you to see. Alrthough you didn't see what it was?? Where did you get bit at?

Of course....... the spoilsport!

Frozen jugs are a good idea, but my chest freezer is about 19 miles away from home

Maybe one of these days we will get it moved up here.

I will be grabbing some frozen fruit out of it for them today.

Here's my Velevet Ant Pictures~ I caught it on Saturday morning out in my backyard!

Guess what I found in the grass over the weekend a Velvet Ant~ *AKA* the cow killer technically this thing is a wingless wasp!! But it's sting is extremely painful and probably could have done some serious damage to the chickens, dogs, or kids if it stung one of them. Or even me for that matter~ but I caught it in a jar to show you all! Check it out...

This is a Female~ with a very toxic stinger!!

Then we found a male Velvet Ant the next day which does have wings but no stinger!

I released the female in a big open feild far away from any houses so she could go about her life! They are really beautiful creatures~ even the male! I let him go back in the yard where he was since he wont bother anything
