Hi!!! Do you still live over here? I'm on Paris Mtn on the Furman side. I wasn't on the Urban Farm tour but hopefully next year! I'm also trying to get something going with the Fall for Greenville festival next year to have an urban coop crawl- we will see!

Do you get your ladies from hatcheries or local folks? If you need more local contacts, let me know and I'll hook you up with my favorites

Good luck on your search for that Americauna!!

You would love to have an Ameraucana or an Easter Egger!

They lay the most cool colored eggs! And I really enjoy my Olive Eggers, too. I used to do all the feather colors mixed but now am starting into blues, blacks and lavenders since seeing the bird is also part of the fun but my EE girls are beautiful with their many colors, too.
I just get so excited when I find their first egg in among all the brown and tan eggs. I know I can depend on them to make my baskets so pretty!

Same for us, Jackie. We are actually near Hampton Park Church closer to Cherrydale, but the State Park at least gives a general idea of the part of Greenville we are in. I think the Urban Coop Crawl would be awesome! Lou Ann, who is housing the chickens, knows a few people with them, so we have been looking at coops and getting some ideas. I was out with her at 7:45 this morning taking pictures of a chicken coop (What did I get myself into?). She will be working on hers this weekend since she will have both sons at home. Going to Brown Feed and SEed in a few minutes to pick up a couple of things.
We got our chicks from Travelers Rest Feed and Seed. Do you know anyone who has any Easter Egger chicks right now? I really would love to add one to our little chick family.
We should try to get together one morning. It would be fun. We are both off on Fridays, and then the weekends.

Lost my lavender silkie roo. And a black one.
Think we have lost an OEG hen too. They are hard to count when they are all over the yard during the day.....will have to wait until feeding time to be sure.

The black one and the hen are completely gone. The lavender was bloody & dead in his breeding cage. The hen seemed unharmed. He was a mean lil bugger so no doubt he fought.

Someone is either turning their dog loose, or have set it out. It is a yellow fluffy thing with a chow face. It has been caught in our yard three times now, but when we walk outside it runs up the road. We have seen it going to the end of our road, just trotting up the middle. It does have a collar, don't know about tags.

I may have to set the neighbor's big live trap!

Let me find out who it is.......

they will replace my roo! I will take the dog's body to their house too!

ETA: We know everyone's dogs on this road......from right below our house up to the hwy......this is a strange dog.
ETA2: OMG to replace that roo......at his age......He was about 2! IMPOSSIBLE and/or EXPENSIVE!

Our convo the other day:

DH: But he was mean.
ME: *&^@%*&^%, he was MY roo! I don't (&*#$*&^()#@)@^@%%$ if you think he was mean, he just had attitude!!!!!

So sorry! I lost two of my lav silkies a few weeks ago. Not fun. I have three roosters in my lav coop that are black splits (or just black... I don't know for sure). They just started crowing. You can have one if you want.

ETA: Technically they are cockerals I guess. They were born in November.

That storm made it down here but it had petered out a little by that point. Didn't really have any damage at the farm except a few chairs blew over. We had our bad one a few weeks ago.

My current chicken loss due to the hawk: 19 hens
Due to the heat: 7 hens

I moved my lav and wheaten Ameraucanas back together and put the layers in their coop with a covered run until we figure out what to do. We were losing a chicken a day. They look longingly at the grass but at least they're safe. I hate that stupid hawk. Really hate it.

And we put our 14-yr old lab down today. He couldn't get up yesterday. It was time but he had been with us for my children's whole lives. They are so sad.

I'll miss him. He was a great dog that was sweet to the chickens. Now we're dogless.

Guinea question: I still have the two guineas that hatched in with the silkies. At what point should I move them and what should I do with them. They are growing and starting to fly around the run. They still follow their mama around everywhere. It's so cute!

On a positive note: I let my other two broody silkies sit on assorted silkie eggs. One has hatched 6 little beauties and they are doing great. The other had three hatch yesterday. I have no heat lamp on them. I guess the mamas keep them warm at night. They were zooming around the run on day two. Amazing! I love to see them get underfoot of the roosters and the rooster looks down like "Who are you?" Definitely easier letting the mamas raise them than dealing with dirty pine shavings, heat lamps, and all that in the house. Joy is probably thinking I'm the worst chicken mom in the world! It's the first time I've had actual babies hatch in the coop. So fun to watch! I guess that's the way the farm works. One death... one life.

I have two black Ameraucana chicks, one blue French Marans chick, and five Wheaten Marans chicks (one is definitely a boy) if interested. The Marans lay dark chocolate eggs and the Ameraucanas lay blue.

I may be interested in the Ameraucana chicks. How old are they? Trying to think of how crazy my weekend is.
