chasamp, another city girl gone country here! I used to live in Austin, TX, right in the heart of south Austin. I got my first chickens when I lived there. Next thing I knew, all the neighbors had chickens, too!
Mine all live to ripe old age, because neither DH nor I can process chickens. We're chicken, I guess.
scgamecock, I really hope you can keep the little buzzards out. I lost quite a few last year to a dog, I have all the parts for an electric fence- just need dry weather and a helper to clear the jungle to get it in. I'm in Hollywood, south of Charleston by about 30 miles.
I haven't ever been to an auction, because I have a closed flock. The only way a chicken comes in here is if I hatched it. I would consider chicks from a hatchery though, if I really wanted to expand. I'm hoping some of the pullets I have now will go broody, because every time I hatch chicks the heat lamp sends the electric bill through the roof!
