I rarely medicate my birds other than ivermectin under the wings for prevention of lice/mites, and wormer when needed.

I don't feed birds yogurt. Makes no sense to me.... Why feed yogurt? No way can the thingys in yogurt be doing any good in the gizzard. Birds process and grind food there, not gain anything from it until it moves through the system, and by then

Besides, one of the Doctors on the Chicken Whisperer talk show says not to & I cannot remember why, but it was nice to know I was not the only one to NOT do this.

I used steam rolled oats in my silkie feed mix. They eat it like rest of food. I tried warm oatmeal once. They did not touch it.

I do use ACV in the water once a week. Mainly to keep waterers cleaner, also with my show birds, I know if they have a little ACV in the water, when we go to shows I can take water from home with a little in it & they recognize it and drink it.

That ivermectin you use under wings..is it a cream?? I always thought it came as a shot.

I got the pour on this last time. But I do 1 drop under bantam wings and 2 under LF wings. I used a needle-less syringe to administer it. Sometimes I get 2 drops instead of one, or 3 drops instead of 2, but not noticed any effects from it.

I have used the ivermectin in a bottle like you give in a shot because that is what we had on hand with dogs, goats, etc. I just don't give it to chickens in a shot.


ETA: I do have a paste. For the horses. Just not used that on chickens - I think just enough in that tube for one horse.

What is the general thought on deworming chickens? Does anyone do it routinely or just wait and see if they notice any symptoms? Ours are a little over 9 weeks old now and I was wondering if I needed to do this anytime soon.

They live but do not thrive. I fear I will have to remove them permanently as I have spent 2 months working with them and have seen no change. Yes, I do get rabies vax for my cats and dog but that is because there isn't a natural immunity against death!

I use ACV and garlic mixed in my waterers but am doing it less this year because it is just too hot to be out there mixing it and most of the time I forget it in the barn while making rounds with the water wagon and ice.
I use DE only in the bedding in coops or the favorite dusting spots. I have never believed it would deworm them. Though I am beginning to wonder if it would help with gape worms. I do use red pepper flakes to deworm a lot of the time but this year since the lice/mites have been so bad then when I treated everyone this past spring I just used the Eprinex. It treats internal and external parasites to a degree. It does not take care of coccidiosis.

If I feed oats it is rolled oats or this time of year the chickens like some fermented oats. I use about a 5 gallon bucket or sometimes a 3 gallon and put whole oats in it. Add about a cup or cup and a half of ACV, add water enough to make the oats start floating and let set for 2-3 days. OMG! When you offer that to the chickens they go nuts! As soon as I bring the bucket out the door of the feed room they know what it is and start trying to get into it. Especially at the first of the summer.

I have offered yogurt as a treat to my chicks but they would not eat it. I saw no reason to offer it to sick birds as their gut does not react the same as ours. They are not mammals so not all things work on their digestive system like it does on ours.

I haven't heard about fruits and sick birds but I don't offer things such as that when they don't feel well. It is bland staple foods that i offer.

I have offered warm oatmeal to my Silkies in the winter when they had gotten too wet and they did eat it. But they are used to eating the mash balls I make so that may have made a difference.

Hi everyone! I live in Columbia and am in the market for two pullets, preferably already laying eggs. Anyone within a 30-minute drive of Columbia have any to sell? I'm not too picky about the breed, just looking for some healthy birds that will be good pets!
