South Carolina

Hi Joycats,

I was at Echterdingen. It's just south of Stuttgart and the Neckar river. I was in the Army. We had UH-1 Huey Helicopters on the south side of the Stuttgart Flughafen (Airport). The base was call Eckerdingen Army Air Field, spelled wrong as compaired to the German name. It's all gone now. Lost at the end of the Cold War. I did traveled alot. I was a Huey crew chief and I flew for a two star General. We carried him all over Europe. I spent some time in England, France, Belgium, Italy and Greece. I also traveled on my own to Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and West Berlin. I remember the Dark Brown Eggs in the markets. I had never seen eggs that dark and did not know they were chicken eggs until my German girl friend told me and that I had been eating them while I traveled. I do know they were very rich in texture and taste. At least compared to state side eggs. I also remember how good the Rotisserie Huhnchen (Grilled Chicken) was. It was nearly as good as my Grandmothers Sunday chicken. She raised her own chicken and eggs when I was a kid. I had always thought the reason her chicken was better than anyones becuase of her cast iron skillet and seasonings. but I have her recipes and skillet now and I can't get close to her chicken. I hope by raising my own and cotrolling thier feed and enviroment I can at least do good chicken if I cant do as good. Thanks for the welcome. Donald

Hello and Welcome Don! Very glad to have you here on the S.C. thread. It sounds wonderful up there, with cooler temps. This heat has made me consider relocating. I have marans and quail as well as a lot of other breeds. What part of Europe did you live in? My uncle lived in Germany for several years and my cousin just moved back here to the states from Luxemburg.

My problem has been found and has now been solved.... So 5 eggs remain!!! Good luck oh broody hen and may chicks be here soon.. But I'm not gonna get over excited!!!! Just gonna let it play out!!!

Thanks FarmerJohn. I know the area well. I have had training at Ft. Gordon and I use to live in the Athens area. I'm still a member of the Elberton Gun Club and I have a few friend in the Greenwood area.

I'm in Greenwood!

I'll take a picture of the roos when it cools down. They're relaxing in the coop right now.

The Mille fleur Cochin eggs I put in the incubator Saturday I looked at today with a flashlight. A couple look like they aren't developing and others are already sprouting veins. I was able to see the heart beating on a smidgeon of a chick. Kinda of cool. I keep having to remind myself to give them a little more time. I'm used to my doves eggs. They hatch at day 14 and today the whole egg would be entirely covered in veins and in about 2-3 more days would be too dark to see anything.

I sent you a PM about tge roo, but it might not have gone through. If you dont get it, let me know and I will send again.

My PM didnt seem to work earlier. My Ameraucana roo is nine weeks old and came from Susanna at Huckleberry Farm. Lou Ann just wants to keep her neighbors happy so would like to rehome him. He is free and we could meet you halfway somewhere if you are interested.

oh I hate it when neighbors get all bossy and huffy... I didn't get the pm? I come to Greenville often. usually Fridays are good that's my big running around paying bills day.. I have ppd meetings every other Thursday downtown Greenville by the hospital ( tomorrow night) . pm me and let me know where you are in g'ville. so we can see when I can get him and keep the huffy
neighbor from complaining..

Just trying to make friends. You sound like you have plenty of Roo's.
I"ll keep them and butcher them at 20 weeks for freezer birds. Next year I hope to hatch a bunch and raise a good many for the freezer and friends. I may even get some Jersey Giants and see if they will make a decent replacement for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Deep Fried Turkey. We always have to much left over and I don't like the Tryptophan in Turkey that makes you sleepy. Anyone try to deep fry a chicken like a Turkey? I've heard it can be done but I've never seen anyone do it.

looks like I got all my chicken chores done earlier than everyone else tonight..

I just thought I'd give you guys a laugh.. for those of you who have not met me.. I am not a little woman.. I am heavy set.. I have my Polish in a coop on the outside of my yard in the pasture.. so I have three choices of how to get to them I can take the long way all the way around the 2 acr yard from one side to the other. or I can squeeze through the fence and yes I do mean squeeze thru.. one boob at a time.. or I can climb over the fence where the top board is down.. tonight I thought i would climb over.. HA... bad idea.. I got kind of stuck straddled over the board, so I kind of heaved up and over, then my shoe got caught up in the wire fence but I had all ready started over so I did this kind of very Ungraceful flip over the fence till I landed in a loud thump on the ground, with one leg still stuck up in the fence and one hand still on the board fence.. so apparently In slow motion I cried out "OH NOOOOO" as I was falling to the big crash..my son and two of my spoiled teens Jett and Elsie came running to me wings flapping making all this beeping and peeping sounds.. then as I knelt there on the ground, getting the air back in my lungs. They calmly waited for me to get up, then followed me over to the bench at their coop.. I am soooo glad that no one was around with a camera I might have won 10k but what A sight it would have been...
