Thanks FarmerJohn. I know the area well. I have had training at Ft. Gordon and I use to live in the Athens area. I'm still a member of the Elberton Gun Club and I have a few friend in the Greenwood area.
I'm still fuzzy on New Math, I have a whole lot of home work to get qualified on Chicken math. LOL Thanks for the welcome. Donald

Hello! Welcome to the SC thread and BYC
Nothing more fun than sitting around talking turkey, I mean chicken, although talking turkey might be fun too- just haven't gotten that far yet! Does anyone know if Turkey math is like chicken math?
I don't know anyone here that is very close to where you live. Mary is over in Pickens and sells the best honey from her bees but as far as I know she and Lroach are the only ones in your direction!
You live in very pretty country over there and I bet you do have cooler temps than I do.
I enjoyed the Doms that I had but never kept any for long because people like buying them and I have gone through 3 small flocks in 2 years and still have none left for me.
They must be some really great birds. The older girls I had did lay extremely well and I hated to sell those but my friend up in Landrum only has Doms and begged me for them. They have an excellent home and are spoiled.
I do love my Marans! That is the best tasting meat ever! And those dark eggs are glorious.
A few folks on here have Quail. I used to love them when Dad went hunting but I have never had home raised ones. Every time I hear the Bob White out in the pasture my tummy growls for some of that nice tasting bird. What a shame they are so small!

Wow! Another new member and a welcome addition to our SC thread!
My gosh yes, we do have the predators! I didn't see them the first few years I had chickens. I was extremely lucky because I kept my bantam white Cochins in a horse stall with no protection from raccoons or possums or anything! After a few years I realized I had to get on the ball and keep them safe.
I built a lot of great coops but still when they free ranged the foxes would come up and try to nab one right in front of me. I love to see wildlife but not when they take off with my property or pets. I finally broke down and got a LGD last year when a hawk tried to get my full grown duck right in front of me and my DH. Jolie has been a great asset but I have still lost a few and she gets real upset about it. But she has to sleep sometime so I don't blame her. She is usually very diligent.
Snakes can be big trouble but I found sulfur to work very well. Owls can be a problem for some but I lock mine up at night. Well, most of them. I have a few roos that sleep in odd spots but they are ones that will eventually wind up in my freezer so I can share those.
Now I do love to see the deer and turkey come through. Those are fairly safe creatures except they drink all the water up from my horse when I don't expect it and eat any grain I leave out from the free rangers supper. I suppose those are simple things though.
Jump in on all our conversations and tell us all your ideas and plans! We love to hear from everyone!

If Susanne runs out I have some growing up that will be headed for freezer camp in another 2 months. I have a few blues, blacks, reds, whites and mixed colors like wheaten and splash. Mine are much younger than Susanne's so color hasn't come together on some of them yet. She is much closer to where you live so that would be your best route.
And I still have a lot hatching in the 'bator but a lot of those are staying unless they are not a nice lavender color. I am trying to keep all my lavender Ameraucanas until they are mature and I can see the shades so I can pick the best roos from those groups.
Do you know, I only have 2 EE girls left? And only one Olive Egger that is laying age. I have girls growing up that I have not sold and do not plan to until I see egg color. I can't seem to hang on to what I need for future breeding programs.
Hi WestKnollAmy,
I just got back from Walhalla. It's about ten minute drive and ten degrees hotter as the city is below us at the foot of the mountain. I do love the weather up here, even the cold. We usually get snow when everyone else gets ice.
I will have several extra Roosters if you want one or two. I want to keep 12 hens for myself and do not know if I have that many. My chicks are straight run from a Friends flock in Arnoldsville, GA. He hatched 32 eggs and keep eight for himself and I got the others. We lost one early and a couple did not hatch but over all we had very good luck I thought to get 29 out of thirty two eggs. I know I have at least seven Roo's and nine hens. The others are still iffy. They are dark on top and lighter on the chest. Legs tend to be dark almost a little greenish in color. I think they maybe hens but don't know. If they are hens then I may have more then I need/want. My first chickens and I only know what I've been told and read. Of my friends Seven laying hens he gets seven eggs a day almost every day. These should be great Dominiques if they take after their parents.
My friend raises several thousand Qual each year to stock his and and a few other farms for hunting. He raises Bob White Qual only. He feels that putting a native bird back into the wild has a better chance to survive and reproduce. I can get Qual from him for free just like the Dominiques, and I like Qual for eating so that's the reason I'm thinking about raising them for myself. I could release the extra's as well. The Bob White's are rare here now. Not sure if it's over hunting or the Hawk's Clemson let loose up here about ten years ago. We have plenty of Hawks but many song birds are nearly extinct.

I'm in Greenwood!
I'll take a picture of the roos when it cools down. They're relaxing in the coop right now.
