You having Americauna's what do you think? would there be a better breed? that you would suggest or I am I on the right track?

I have a couple of Ameraucana roosters that are about 5 months old. Not crowing yet but should be close. Free!!!

Not sure if you ever compared chicks under hens to those hatched at the same time in the brooder--chicks in brooder tend to grow a little faster. They do not have to work for their food I guess!

When my silkie had her keets, she didn't hatch any chicks. One of the other one did hatch chicks at the same time but they just stayed with their respective "babies". No one bothered the guineas and I had a lot of silkies in that run.

Hello out there. I 'm in the sumter area and have Barred Rocks i was reading about the predators in S C . in this thread .I have lived hear 20+years And in all that time rarely have I seen any till Now I have in the last week,in my back yard and in the neihbors trees have seen a hawk,a fox and a Bobcat crossing the road in front of our place and my friends coop was raided by a snake; he showed me a photo of the snake stuck in the fence with a big bulge in it . it could'nt get back out through the chicken wire fence after it had eaten one of his 4 wk old chicks. while I was constructing my coop and pen . I was warned about chicken thieves I thought chicken theft went out after the great depression I guess that was a silly thought; So I guess I'll be locking the pen from now on. You mentioning the hawk reminded me!

Yesterday while sitting at the computer I looked up just in time to see a huge hawk land in my front flowerbed and grab a lizard! I tried to grab my camera and get a picture but as soon as I stepped from the AC into the humid outside, my lens completely fogged up and I couldn't see a thing!
This past weekend my son saw a big black snake out back by the coop, but by the time he came and got me and DH it disappeared. We searched high and low for that critter for a good 30 minutes then gave up. No one is missing and the eggs haven't started missing so hopefully he was just passing through.

Do you have a picture of them? I'm thinking of getting a pure Amer. roo. Color does not matter to me!
