A downdraft can be a hell of a thing. It can have huricane strength winds. It's not uncommon for a downdraft to knock down an acre or more of full grown tree in a forest. It can lift the roof off a house if it's close to the transition edge of the downdraft. They have blown trucks and airplanes over on thier sides. It's not a place you want to be near when a large downdraft strikes.

Hey Phoneman, I'm curious to know what you're getting with your splash roo to splash hen breeding? Do you hatch all splash chicks? I've ended up with a few extra splash marans roosters and I'm trying to figure out what to do with them.

And I want some splash chicks too! I have two splash roos but no hen in my Marans coop. I think you need two splash. Curious minds want to know!

Don, thanks for info. After reading that, I do think we had a downdraft. It would make since looking at how the coops got picked up and thrown.

A coop raising party! Very interested in how that went!

we have never done a project like this.. what do you recommend? the roo we have is black. hes 9 weeks I believe, very nice rooster built nicely, great deep color and a wonderful friendly personality. Colt wants to be able to estimate chick colors that he and his hens will have,,, how many black like him . and how many colored like the hens of each ? I figure he will hatch 2 clutches of each by may next year,

Let me know when it is convenient for you for us to come to you and pick them up.. were homeschooled so weekdays or weekday evening are really easy for us.. but weekends are fine too.

splash to splash=100% splash
blue to splash 50% blue and 50% splash
blue to blue= 25% black 50% blue 25% splasd
blue to black= 100% blue
black to black= 100% black
i think that is the way it is.

We got a good bit done, and some of the fencing up. It will take a few more days to finish up, but we did make good progress.

OH! Now I'm getting excited - so you're finding that blue to black = 100% BLUE? I was told that blue to splash = 100% blue and that was my plan as I want more blue marans. Now I'm wondering if I need to put the blue roo with the black hens and the black roo with the blue hens and leave the splash group all together. I might finally get some blue birds from somewhere!

One thing I've found interesting - in my standard blue cochin pen I only have blues (blue roo and blue hens) but I'm getting 95% blue birds. I have thrown the occasional blue and white cochin but only 1 black cochin. Most of them were solid blue. I've been very surprised with them.

Well just what I feared...Momma Orp is tending to her freshly hatched chick and is somewhat not sitting on the nest...The other eggs should hatch in 48 hrs, but I'm not sure they will cause she sits for a bit then gets up to tend to the first chick then sits then tends. I'm just hoping she's sitting enough to hatch the rest!!!

Mom taking the only chick out for a stroll....

Now Momma is getting a well deserved dust bath and chick is trying to avoid all the dirt flying! She is great with this chick!!!

OH and about the Deep Fried Oreos...Love them, BUT the deep fried Reece's Cups are MO BETTER to me!!!! But since I've lost 23lbs these are not on the menu!!!! lol

For anyone interested, here's the label for Williams' Chick Starter. They're located in Campobello. I'll add more labels this week after I got pick up some of their laying mash.

I hatched using Matt's list below this year. Used Black to Splash and got 100 % Blue.

>For future reference:
>Black X Splash = 100% Blue
>Black X Black = 100% Black
>Black X Blue = 50% Blue, 50% Black
>Blue X Blue = 25% Black(sports), 50% Blue, and 25% Splash
>Blue X Splash = 50% Blue and 50% Splash
>Splash X Splash = 100% Splash

>If you are breeding blues it is good to keep pure Blacks around to breed back into them to keep the coloring clean and sharp in the Blues. If >you are breeding Splashes you don't want to breed Splash to Splash for more then a couple generations. You will end up getting washed out >birds with very few splashes in the coloring.
