Chikkin great group of birds. My bantams are Belguim Antwerp, Gold and Silver Sebrights and Japanese. All cleanlegged varities. I have a flock of brown egg layers as well. Don't show any just enjoy watching them and building coops etc. Do you know of any chicken shows or trade groups anywhere around. I would love to start a somewhat local SC group for trading, swapping etc. Where are you located?

Gorgeous Cochins! I really do want a few more bantam Cochins in the mottled color. Mine are just white and though I love them, the color is boring.
I have a few standards but am not thrilled with them. They are good girls but I have them just for broody hens.

I am thinking of moving to South Carolina Can anyone tell me anything about it? I am married 2 boys 13 and 15. My husband is a truck driver. I am looking for a nice area to raise our kids ( little crime). We are looking into buying a home.

I love Greenwood, SC. I came here from VA/WV. The winters here are just about heavenly ! If I NEVER see snow again, I will be very happy. I have seen snow flakes twice since I have been here.
I have been here 5 years. We have had a few very small tornadoes touch down here, but the damage is not devastating. If you have problems with heat/humidity, you may want to re-think moving to SC. Personally, I can handle the heat in SC a whole lot better than I can the cold in the north.

BUT, South Carolina has a VERY high unemployment rate at this time. There are actually jobs here, but, they are the burger flipping, low paying types. I work at Wal~Mart, so I simply transferred from a WV store to the one here in Greenwood.

Drug use causes a very high crime rate in this area. The news paper is full of drug busts. Meth is a major factor in the crime level here. Domestic violence, shootings and child abuse are rampant here. Much worse than where I came from in WV.

But, my biggest complaint here is, " I miss the mountains ".

One big plus. . . . the cost of living here is not bad at all.

I got lucky when I found this place, not all of the rentals are this cheap. But, I pay about $650 for rent, electric, water, trash removal and phone. Live in a real nice quiet neighborhood on Lake Greenwood. I do not have DSL or cable TV, by personal choice. My house is 4 bedroom, 2 bath, deck, front porch, carport and I have a garage.

After I re-read what I wrote/posted, I thought wow that looks really negative ! But, if you want, the local paper is called the Index Journal. You can google and read up on what I said......

I came here from WV, drugs and violence just were not like that there. The education system pretty much sucked, but that's another story !

Most of the violent stuff only happens in "certain parts" of Greenwood, so the "other ethnic citizens" just don't go to those parts of town.

I am in a "rural" neighborhood, so to speak. I live by myself (unless I have a room-mate), I do keep my doors locked when I am not home and at night. Before I moved here, I went to the closest neighbors and asked how they felt about dogs. They all have them and no one has complained about mine so far. They all agreed on one thing, this is a crime free, quiet neighborhood. So far, the only flashing lights have been from Rescue Squads and fire trucks.

So, I guess I could sum up what I am saying with . . . . I guess you should be careful where you live where-ever you live ! Crime is everywhere, just worse in some places than others.

SC is the best place to live but stop telling everyone. I already have too many neighbors that don't eat grits!
