Those eggs are huge for 20weeks, or do you have small hands...

my SLW eggs are tiny..... OH and Today I found a ton of eggs under my deck where the birds go to get out of the sun,....the funny thing is me crawling under a 18" space to collect them ..... So if a egg sinks its still good right?????

The egg on the left is from a 20 wk old and the one on the right is from an older hen I have. But I do have small hands too..lol

Amy - your baby guinea keets won't lay until Spring. Guineas lay from April thru about September so the adults are winding down for the year. I think the trampoline pen would be good for them. Could you possibly put a roost rack in there for them to get up off the ground? I know it wouldn't be tall but they'd be happy with just about anything.

Billyj, if she stays in the pen she will probably set for a while longer, but the best and fastest way to break up a hen is to take one of those spare roosters most of us have and put him in a pen with no nest, just food and water and room for several hens--if you put your broody hens in there with him she will be singing in a couple of days and ready to start laying a few more eggs~and she will not be lonely! Of course there may be exceptions!!

Yup I had 3 hhatch out of 6. 2 stopped developing probably around day 10. So maybe next time I'll let the eggs rest 3 days to re-attach air sacs? 1 was fully developed but she kicked it out and when I cracked it open it had not absorbed any of the yolk sac like it should. But I'm good with 3- 2 royal purples and a coral blue. Swoon...

I am glad you were able to hatch some! Enjoy!!

Someone else may have more experience since I've only had a few hens hatch chicks and raise them. My silkies did great for a few days. One then tried to murder her chicks and one completely ignored them. I had to take them all inside where they all ended up dying eventually. Ugh! I know others have had great experiences. My one silkie did do a good job raising her guineas though. Maybe they just don't like chicks that look like them!

I would say it depends on the hen. How about that for a concrete answer!

The best momma hens I have ever had were game hens. I have had mixed experiences with others, but the cochins I have last about 4 weeks at best with the chicks and then they leave them. If it is a first time mom she may be loosing interest. If you seperate her to a pen with just the chicks she will last longer but with the other birds she will probably go to roost sooner. Does any of that make sense? I have to tell you though that I had a broody game hen once that I had to split from her chicks because they got so big they were raising her up at night to get under her--I really wish I had got a picture!

Did you ever get an answer for this?
That is outside of Columbia to the west. The photo for eggs from both breeds is the same. Looks like the Araucanas probably came from Gary Ramey but I am not sure about the Ameraucanas. My eggs from my Araucanas look very different from my Ameraucana eggs.

You will need a state tester to administer the test and you have the results right then. Calle Julie Helm and she can send you all the information about getting NPIP Certified
