Yup I had 3 hhatch out of 6. 2 stopped developing probably around day 10. So maybe next time I'll let the eggs rest 3 days to re-attach air sacs? 1 was fully developed but she kicked it out and when I cracked it open it had not absorbed any of the yolk sac like it should. But I'm good with 3- 2 royal purples and a coral blue. Swoon...

Amy he is blowing up my work email!!! He is just over the moon abotu his new babies and had such a blast at your place yesterday. He said he thoguth it was hilarous that you would talk to Bo and he'd puff up for you. He just had no idea that chickens come in so many sizes and colors. And he's already got chicken math, talking abotu he's like some bantam cochins and polish

Yes, his wife and friend were looking at those Polish girls. I told them if they were still here in another few weeks I would have them available for sale. They thought they were hilarious and cute. And of course, the Cochins were everywhere and when a young roo went scuffling up the driveway they all peeled in laughter at him and made him stop and turn around to give them a cute look. I was hoping that would sell a few more for me.

I am so glad Josh is happy with the girls. I tried to give him a variety of colors and actually had a dark buff Orp and a light one plus those EE's are always easy to get in different colors. Just wait til he gets his first egg!

That is wonderful! I know you are glad to lessen the feed bill and be able to put money back into the "egg jar".
They are so much fun to hatch and raise for a while. I love all of mine and hate to part with any but I don't think the neighbors will be very happy with more than 8 running around and about 15 in a breeding pen. Although I still don't think they are noisy. Maybe next summer they will drive me batty but for now their small bit of calling is sweet.
I can assure you.....I would rather hear them than the vibrating bass from some cars passing down on the road. Or the music from a rental house on the other side of the woods on Sundays. And yes, even the neighbor that insists on getting out his big tractor and mowing his front field on Sundays.

I don't expect mine to lay this year really. And since they probably won't then I think it would be good to put them in the trampoline pen where they can run circles around it and I don't have to crawl into the pen to get eggs from the barrel. Maybe once I ship these Araucanas out to CA in about 2 weeks I will move the keets into their tractor because it has nice roosting poles. Not as big though so they would not last long there. Guess I need to move something out of my 10x10 pens so I can put Guineas in.

Hi everyone. Sorry I have not been on in a while, but with school starting, my birthday, and other stuff going on, I have not had time. Miss a few days (week or so) and boy you miss a lot.

I am glad everyone had fun at the swap. Man I wish I could have been there.

So check this out. All summer, I have had no major things going on with the girls other than a couple of slow days of laying. I even started selling my eggs to the people my wife and I work with. Yah, now I have money to feed the little ones. I have seen everyone go through preditors, broodies, and all sorts of things, and I said to myself poor them. I have not delt with anything so far. Well carma is a booger. I have a bantam barred rock go broody on me. The little girl has laid a total of about 6 eggs and now she wants to be a mommy. I just don't know what to do with her. I don't need any more chickies (at least I say that, I could always use more). Plus my wife would kill me deader than a doornail if I got more. I have tried everything I can short of locking her out of the pen. And I would never do that. I don't have the heart to tell her that the golfball just will not hatch. Everytime I go out, I take her off the nest and she jumps down eats, drinks, and poops, but then she is right back on the nest. I have even tried dunking her little bottom in cool water to try and break her, but that does not work. I don't want to seperate her from everyone else because she is soooooo small and I don't want her to get lonly. HELP!!!! how do you break a broodie. My problem is that she is in a pen with others who are laying. I cant put the wire in the nest boxes because of the others. I also don't want to lock them out during the day because I am not home. Do I just let her do her thing until she gives up? Please help.

Billyj-

awww don't go without dinner, but if you do- eat a large desert instead! I have read that to break a broody you can put them in a wire bottom cage and hang the cage up a few days. With nothing but a wire floor I guess they decide they give up. I'm sure others will have some suggestions as well. Of course if worse comes worse, you could always let her hatch some eggs and then sell or give away the chicks. I'm sure there are plenty of us that would " take one for the team" and find a place to put them!
