Be glad the Bev Davis birds are roos. I found most to be a poor quality for people like us. They do not lay well, they lay smaller than my Whitmore Farms birds and they lay lighter colored eggs, too. She breeds for showing. I breed for temperament, egg laying and meat. I think my birds are beautiful and they are definitely sweet and easy to work with. I love the big dark eggs and mine lay year around except when molting, of course.
Check out Whitmore Farms for some really great Marans.

Amy, thank you for this information! Isn't it funny when you get something from someone you do not get those kind of details. I was told the eggs were not very dark because they were late season eggs. I assumed the size was due to the same reason. I had wanted some Marans and the eggs were actually given to me so it is not that much of a loss. I will check out Whitmore Farms. I do not want to show them, I want the nice dark eggs!

OH MY GOSh I cant believe he survived such a attack.. I can empathize with you as you tried to pull the dogs off you... thank goodness they didn't turn on you.. as they sometime's do when they get in that attacking mind set.

I will send lots of healing energy to your little guy.. I know how heartbreaking it is to loose one.. silly isn't it how we can become so attached to them.. but we do.. so they deserve all the help we can give..

blessed be
)O(

I am missing the question. I do not understand what you are asking.

For one thing, my eggs do not go into the fridge unless they are washed and I do not wash most of my eggs. They sit on the counter sometimes for a week or more before we eat them and have sat out as long as 3-4 weeks before we eat them. I keep the misshapen, calcium spotted, heavily pooped on ones.

my br girl has laid two of the white spotted brown eggs.. I asume thats the calcium spotted your talking aobut.. doe st hat mean she is getting too much calcium or not enough .?? or is it just where she is young and its only like her 5 th egg?

Lark, I was so glad to get to the bottom of your story here and find your rooster is still alive! I am so happy he is hanging in there! I have had dogs that have been around sheep for years and for one reason or another one can't take the ewe butting him any more and it turns on the sheep--and when one dog goes for the kill all your other dogs join in! It is a horrible thing to be a part of and I can see how it would bring on a migraine--what stress!

Keep us informed on how he does!!

I will be prepared for this week coming rain..

Hey ya'll my upside down chick is still alive.. still drinking and taking the nutra-cal.. Ideas? its not getting better shes developing her wing feathers just like the other normal ones.. but of course she cant walk ... I just dont know how to euthanize her.. I dont think I can and I cant starve her or hold back water thats just cruel.. Ideas? maybe if shes still alive on monday Ill take her to Amys for the freezer camp. and get some help?

Not that I agree with any of the suggested methods, but there are some ideas on BYC re euthanization. I've found carbonminoxode method, freezer method, scissors, soothing w/ baking soda and a coffee can. I just make my husband do it!!! Fortunately for me, the one I thought I was gonna have to cull, dissapeared.

oh my gosh all those suggestions sound horrible.. ahhhhhh I know i know that this is part of farm life.. it happens to be the part I dont like.. aragggagg

I just bought a bunch. Got them in the mail a few minutes ago. The absolute best place to buy them is http://poultry2.tripod.com/id3.html.
Email
them and give them your zip code and they will send you a price.
I just bought 5 boxes for less than $40. There is no where else you can get them for this great of a price with shipping!

I had to buy boxes though because a man out in CA just bought my entire Araucana flock. I priced them high because I didn't really want to sell my beautiful babies but he jumped at it. He bought a pair from me last year and is raising some fabulous chicks out of them so he wanted all I had to sell. I wanted to keep one or two but he talked me into selling him everything. Man! I could use more buyers like that!

So there is yet another tractor I have clearing out. Unfortunately, I always have more to fill it with.

The extra calcium on the eggs are bumpy spots. No, they aren't getting too much calcium at all. It just means that they are not putting the shell on just right yet. It will change as she matures.
Even some older girls will have this happen. I think Laverne and Shirley are doing their usual job at the shell covering part of manufacturing.

Several people have told me to try hosing them. I would, but our house does not have a water spicket in the backyard! We have one on the side of the house and one in the front yard. Weirdest design ever.

i guess i, asking how do you know if there may be a chicken in them or not lol

Hon, if you have a roo with a hen then there is a very good chance the egg will develop. However, you won't know there is a chick inside until it does start to develop after about 3 days under a hen. If you haven't collected eggs for a few days and a hen has been on those eggs the whole time either let her keep them to hatch or toss them.
There isn't going to be a problem if you collect your eggs every day. The roo will have fertilized the eggs but they are going to be doing any growing unless under the right temps and circumstances. Take them from under the hen or out of the nest box and put them in the fridge. They aren't chicks yet.
I do have some friends that are vegetarians and they will not eat a fertilized egg because they say it is life and they do not believe in killing life. Denise is a veterinarian and does not believe in any type of abortion, animal or human. I hate that I can't give them fresh unfertilized eggs but I have a roo in every pen since I have a breeding program and my free range roos are out there for flock protection. Well, unless the hens are covered by Adonis. He is my buff Orpington and sterile as they come.
