Susanne, all guineas make that "chi, chi, chi" warning call but only the hens make the two syllable "buck wheat, buck wheat" call. They start to make that sound around 6 - 8 weeks of age. It just takes a bit of watching and you can figure it out. My favorite past time, sitting and observing my guineas.

I thought of you, Joy when Patsy said hers were flying up in the tree to sleep. I knew you had gone through the same thing and yours were out in that snow we had last Jan, I thought you said, and they did fine. I knew you had some open structures where yours can come and go if they like so I knew you could help Patsy with what works well for that.

I am such a silly person as to have worried myself sick with Guinea Girl sleeping in the tree behind the barn. She was used to it but I worried about an owl, which Jolie could not protect her from. But I think she is part of the flock now and where they go she will, too. With the 4 new juvies joining their family flock and the 2 babies that Guinea Girl and Boy raised successfully, then I have a nice crowd of talkers. There are at least 2 juvie girls so Guinea Boy thinks he is a KING!

And now I have 6 babies running around the brooder coop with them at night as I figure they aren't going to venture far. Two are Pearl pieds and I will keep them but the others go to the sale next week. I think I am taking about 18 Pearl keets to sell.

Yep, I have some hard headed birds.

But I'm learning to trust them a bit, they do know how to survive. I just want to mother them all and keep them snug and cozy but some are rebels. I have a flock of about a dozen chickens that sleep in the tree. And most of my layers refused to sleep inside the coop all summer choosing rather to sleep on top of it. It was too hot so I didn't bother them. On occasion I would go out in the rain and move them inside, most would stay some wouldn't. Really all that happened is that I got wet. The birds think I'm a lunatic. Most of my guineas have moved to the trees now too even though they started out in the coop with the chickens. I have a couple of guineas that sleep in the coop.

OMG! They are trying to make us give up chickens!

I went the other day and got 4 bags of starter and 4 layer from the local mill. I paid less than $85. But that still hurts. I feel good when I earn a bit from selling only to go spend it over at the feed mill.

Since we're speaking of chicken food, I will share my excitement. I'm having food delivered today from Rogers! Hopefully 3 - 4 weeks worth of food. It feels like Christmas!

If anybody is interested, the Faithway Food they sell at Rogers Feed in Pelzer has really worked to keep their prices down. They have had only 2 price increases in the past year where all the others are going up 50 cents or more every couple of weeks. Current price is $9.59 per 50# bag of layer, either pellets or crumble. That's a big difference. And they also give an incentive to shop there. Your purchases are cumulative and for every $300 you spend they give you $10 off your order. Just thought I'd share as I was so relieved to find them. There's no way I could afford to keep my birds and pay $15 per bag for food.

Glad I'm not the only one

Nah, you aren't the only one.
I have 2 broody Silkies on 3 eggs and the GLW is broody on air again. I have a Muscovy that wants to be broody but I told her no and I think she is getting the message. I have a smooth Sizzle hen that wants to go broody but I have a wiating list for their eggs and I keep throwing her out of the nest. I think that is everyone.....
roll.png

I also have three choc scovie hens who are broody.Fluff feathers in piles in the underrun, chirping when you get near 'em and the like. Pity I dont have a drake yet,so its all fruitless.

Oh - I forgot about my muscovy duck, have one of those on eggs too. I guess I have 3 ducks sitting. It's too cold to be having baby ducklings!

That's a big difference! What do you mean it's being delivered? Do they deliver feed?
