Gee, all last night I just worked on my web site and you all were watching chick TV. I guess I could have watched my brooder in here with the Porcelain d'Uccle chicks. But no, work, work, work for me!

Ok, I live in the city. We do have a lot of trees and woods around us but we are in the city and I don't know of anyone anywhere around here that has chickens. It may not even be allowed under city ordinance... I don't know.
But in June, a chicken just showed up pecking at dropped seed under my bird feeders in the front yard. I have lived here in this house since 1986 and never seen a chicken. LOL It was quite a surprise!
I don't know anything about chickens. I put out cracked corn for her.
She is wearing a band and is pretty skittish. Someone told me that she is a female game chicken.

My question is what should I be feeding her, etc.?
And does anyone have any ideas as to how she might have endeed up here? I mean I don't know if chickens sometimes get out and can travel quite a ways or what.

Thanks so much for any help/suggestions.

I found an egg that the Silkies had knocked out of their nest box and figured it would not hatch because it was cold to the touch but I stuck it back under them anyhow. All of them hatched out! They are more resilient that we give them credit for.

And remember my big Sportsman got up over 102 the other Sunday? I candled eggs last night that needed to go in the hatcher (one BLRW is your egg, Jackie!) and all 12 of those eggs were moving around so they survived just fine.

It is amazing and a true miracle of life!

Your bird feeder allows some good eating but I am sure she is probably laying eggs or getting ready to start back this time of year so putting out some layer crumbles will help with her nutrition some, too. There may be a feed store around that sells layer crumbles or laying mash in a smaller bag than just 50#.

Most city ordinances have been passed to allow no chickens but others have passed to allow hens and no roosters. There is a section here on BYC that helps you find out about your area.

I am sure she has done well to survive this long and may attract a rooster with her clucking around. You just never know. Also, the owner may be out looking for her but catching a game bird is often too much work when you can hatch out more.

I hope you have a new pet and will get to enjoy her for a long time. Maybe she will be kind enough to find your porch a coxy spot to lay you some eggs. One can always hope!

There may be tons of other ideas on here from other folks and that is what is so great about BYC. We all come together to help each other.

And I will go to the feed store and get the food suggested. I want to do right by her. I am so excited to have her around.
If she laid some eggs at my house I would be as proud and excited as if I had laid them myself! LOL
