You are right about that, Susanne. I make a lot more money on hatching eggs than the eating eggs.
Fortunately, my business is very local for the eating eggs so most folks come to me for the eggs. I keep records of all sales so I know how much each egg and each chicken costs me. I have a few delivery sales but only to ones where I am going anyhow, like the Dairy. I have to buy milk so delivering eggs works out great for me! And for anyone that thinks they are lactose intolerant, try raw milk. I had been told for years I was and then realized it is the chemicals in the milk that I can't tolerate.
Swamp Rabbit Cafe picks up eggs from my husband at his work so no extra gas there. My laying hens and ducks do produce enough eggs to pay for their own feed and my breeding birds do produce enough to pay for their housing and feed. It is a balancing act and I work hard for the farm to make enough to be able to feed us and help out others. It has been very nice to be able to eat eggs and chicken from our own farm as well as the veggies.

Oh yeah! I was at Swamp Rabbit cafe this morning. Jac and Mary say hey!

For the Georgialina Chickenstock:

BAD NEWS !!! I just heard from Dept of Aggriculture. They said in order to sell poultry in Ga, you must have a license. If is an official sale the license is with the organizer. I know this is disappointing. Make sure you know this is a SWAP and not a Sale. What you do with your birds after is your business.

And welcome to our SC thread! Pull up a chair or old cooler and sit a spell. Tell us about yourself a bit.
Do you raise a garden? Do you live on a lot of land or a small plot near town? Have you had chickens before or will this be your first venture with our fowl friends?
Do you already own an incubator or planning to purchase one?

Easley has quite a few chicken people around the area. Many of us are near you.
I live on the Greenville/Spartanburg county line between Greer and Landrum. You are welcome to come visit my place and see the several incubators I have running. I have been hatching out chicks for several years and it isn't as difficult as it would seem.

Please visit my website to see if anything interests you and you can see a few photos of my 'bators on my Housing page, too.

I love to meet folks from BYC and have many friends on here because BYC SC folks are the best!

I would love to tell you a little about me and my wonderful family. I have a beautiful wife and two awesome children. I am a landscaper by trade and I absolutely love gardening, and most other outdoor things. We live on 2.5 acres between Easley and Dacusville so I have a very nice sized garden. We love to live off of our land and spent most of the summer tending to animals and canning vegetables and fruits from the garden. We have had chickens for almost a year now and LOVE IT!! We have 10 hens who are consistently laying 10 eggs a day right now and another 5 Ameraucanas who are only 9 weeks old. We can't have enough chickens! My 4 year old son owns the "egg business". We have begun to teach him how money works so he sells the eggs to neighbors/family, buys the feed, gives a share of the money away and buys a reward with some of the profit. It has been an all around awesome experience for our family to have chickens and we just want more!

I actually just purchased (after months of research) and R-Com 20 from a gentleman on Craigslist. He bought it 6 months ago and then was told he couldn't have a rooster in his neighborhood so he sold me the whole thing with additional trays for $250. I couldn't pass it up! Now I have the fever to incubate but I have no rooster or fertile eggs. Ok, I'll take a breath now and listen.

Nice to "meet" ya!

You are a dear!
Are you not coming down to the rabbit show in Columbia SC in a few weeks? I have some folks from Sieverville TN that we show Guinea Pigs with that is stopping by to pick up a bunch of Cochins from me that weekend. We are not going to the show because DD has nothing much left to show and has lost interest. No more breeding and she is down to almost 50 piggies now. She doesn't want to go off to college and have them all left here for me to care for so she has stopped breeding.

I like the way he looks. Not badly typed at all so my solid black girls may be just the ticket in that pen. Naturally my typy roos are either MF crosses or too black. Oy!

Time for a mini donkey!

Oh, gosh! Jackie will be riding a donkey around the mountain! Watch out bear and coyotes! Too funny to picture that!

Oh my, it's been a busy week and I haven't been on here all week. I don't think I"ll ever get caught up!!! Susanne, your babies are all doing well. They are so cute and eating like little pigs!!! I don't think I've ever had chicks eat so much. Thank you so much!

My game hens are fantastic mothers! I have one little game hen (Nutmeg) and I raised her from a chick so she is much more tame than the others that came to me grown. Her and her chicks are always under my feet when I'm outside. They're sleeping in my greenhouse and I can pet them. The last clutch she raised was a surprise. She sat on eggs in my little cat house that's on my front porch. I had no idea she was in there until I came home to find her sitting at the front door with 6 little chicks under her wing waiting on me to help her put them somewhere. I fixed her a plastic dog crate and offered it to her. She walked her babies in there and waited on the food and water to be served.

Such a funny bird. We call this clutch the spice girls, my son helped me name them and they're all spices (like Mom). Cinnamon, Ginger, Pepper, Paprika. Anyway - I'm not good at telling gender when they're babies but I'd guess roo on that first chick. It has a really big comb already and the legs look big. That's just my guess, for what it's worth.

Thanks, I agree on # 1 being a roo...it will surprise me if not. Yep these game hens and roo are really cool except they won't go inside! I worry about them sleeping 20 feet up in a tree when all these trees are losing leaves...not much cover here in winter. I have made shelters here and there for them...I guess if they get cold enough they will do something.

My d'Uccles came home today--Oh, I mean my daughter's d'Uccles came home today! I love them!! Thank you Emptynester!! I have already hugged on them and they are so mellow! I put them in a wire bottom pen for the short term and they do not like it very much--I hope to get them a new residence finished soon.
