Mary - I don't even try to guess color until they're a little older. Usually by the 2nd or 3rd week I can see what the cochins will be. Silkies are harder for me, still have trouble as some of the ones that look black to me are called blue by others. But as for leaving feedback, I have to answer this from an egg "shippers" point of view. I think the only fair feedback to leave is pertaining to how you received the eggs. There are many factors contributing to the hatch rate - incubator temps, human error, mishandling during shipping etc. And for my own education - is there some way you can check to be certain that the 7 eggs were infertile and not damaged in shipping? I would love to know a way to check after they've sat in the incubator for 3 weeks. Just wondering. So am I understanding this right - you bought 12 eggs and they sent 18. 7 were clear with no development. 11 were obviously good and so far 3 have hatched? Fingers crossed your other eggs will hatch. Shipped eggs are a gamble for sure.

The eggs packing was questionable. Eggs were wrapped individually in bubble wrap but were placed in a homemade bubblewrap envelope that had extra space in it so eggs could shift around. I did not really expect any to hatch because of the packing. The 7 eggs did not stay in the incubator 3 weeks. They were clear when I candled them at 7 or 10 days. I broke them and they were not fertile.
The yolks had no sign of a "halo"or embreyo. Maybe shipping did that but the 7 buffs were fertile. All started forming. 2 did not go into lockdown since they were only partially developed. I bought 12+ silkie eggs and she sent 14 silkie eggs and decided to include 4 cochins which I was not interested in. Figured if they developed, I would give them to someone. I have no problem with so few hatching or with what she probably thought was good packaging. What I have a problem with is that they were advertised as " purebred bearded splash & buff silkie" and are mixed mutts. I know shipped eggs are a gamble which I am willing to take but shipping "designer" eggs is unethical and false advertising.

I agree Mary and I would leave feedback to that respect. It's just hard to leave details as they don't give you much space to write. It's good to know that you can still check the yolk after a week or so in the bator. I've tried it with eggs left a while longer and the yolks just fall apart.

Well, I don't have any silkie x polish birds but if the crest holds true to polish it looks like a hen to me. The hens have very neat crests with wider feathers. The roos have messier crests with longer, thinner feathers.

The bird pictured is a pure frizzle polish. (Not one of the mixes) The breeder said she thinks its a hen.

I actually found that my French pearls are still laying in a nest. They are running loose right now and have made a nest under the pile of old purch wood we have in the field. Their eggs did not seem very fertal this year so I am letting them be. They also do not tend to set so I am interested to see if one of them will on that nest.

Heidi - I wouldn't be surprised for you to still be getting a few eggs down your way. I'm sure the temps are much warmer there. But Kris is up here near me, actually just down the road I think. I've never had young guineas lay in the Fall. Mine always wait until spring to start and my adult hens always stop laying in Sept./early Oct.

Joy, that is when mine usually stop laying--or at least the smaller, regular size guineas. They all stopped laying around the end of August to the middle of September. And no, mine do not start laying that I hatched this season until the following spring. Our weather is very nice here right now though....

Interesting Joy. Our Guineas were born June 7, they are 5mo. We got 4 eggs today. As I said we have tagged as female. I am so shocked they started laying this early, but now it seems even more interesting.

I have to say they are funny birds that have gotten very brave the past few days. They use to stay in the horse pasture, well this week they found out the could fly up on the fence and get to the front yard. Yesterday, they discovered the back yard (dog yard) I sure hope they will stay on our property. The good news though they definitly want in the hen house at night. So at dusk, they are already on the perches.

today, just wanted to share.
I have ordered(won) 5 sets of hatching eggs the last few weeks.
The first 2 have hatched great with some great looking chicks.
I have 2 more sets (39 eggs

) in the incubator. I candled yesterday.
One is 90% so far and the other is 100% developing.

Mary, I PM'd you. I believe this is the same seller I have been having a major battle with as well. If so, do not trust her! She will never make it right!

I think Moonchild has strawberries, too. I am not sure how he grows them in his yard, though. Maybe like Joy.

I actually don't have strawberries, but I have been thinking about giving them a whirl!!!! Hanging Baskets actually sound like a good idea. I do have black-raspberries and the chickens actually keep the ground around them scratched pretty clean and really don't eat the leaves and the Raspberries are Pretty high up so they only get a few, but I think it's good excerise for them to jump that high to reach a few!!!! And So far they have left my collards and Cabbages alone.....for now....but I do have a 18in little fence around it Yes they can get over it but most of the time they don't bother it.....For Now.. hahaha!!! I'll come home tomorrow and everything will be as bare as the desert...lol!!!!
