South Carolina

I was so looking forward to spring chickenstock but I will be at the Science Olympiad national competition in Ohio that day :( I was wanting to bring some birds, possibly some silkies or turkeys, and of course bring a few home, but I guess I can't now. Oh well. I know you guys will have plenty of fun, be sure to take some pictures to share :)

Silkies to sell?

Hey there! I've read most of the threads I could find about what brand/type of feed everyone has posted but a lot of the ones listed aren't available here in SC. So to my fellow South Carolinians....what feed do you guys use ? Or is there a thread on this that I have missed ?

Thanks !

I use layena layer feed for hens, Flock raiser for roos and carolina pride starter/grower for chicks.

Really, one pullet in particular. I believe I've sent you a picture on facebook, she has a small crest and long back. Good foot feathering though. However, she's broody now (with the rest of the girls) so I think I'll keep her a little longer to take advantage of her broodiness.

In other news, my first batch of turkeys are beginning to hatch....3 days early! they're a cross between a royal palm hen and a red bronze tom (from a bourbon red, royal palm cross). Another batch is due next monday. I have a batch of chickens due next wednesday, and my turkey hen is again building up another nest (I have her other eggs under some chicken hens) that presently contains 10 eggs, so I'll probably have even more turkeys due to hatch next month. Love this spring chick weather!

I use flock raiser for my entire flock. Chicks, hens, roosters, turkeys, ducks. I provide free choice oyster shell for hens that are laying. I haven't been too impressed with the feather quality layena produces. I've noticed much better plumage with the higher protein flock raiser.

I live in Greenville and drive about 45 mins to Campobello to buy feed from Williams Feed.

We were thinking of going to ALL flock raiser too. Every morning when the chickens get out, they all head over to the turkeys flock raiser, so why not.(price)

We use the Flock Raiser Pellets, do you use crumble or pellet?

RobertH
I use crumble. It is easier for the ducks and chicks to eat, and my larger birds don't accept pellets well either. The flock raiser is a bit pricier than layer, but worth it I think. It's so much easier to use the same stuff to fill up everybody's feeder, and not have to worry about anybody getting into feed they're not supposed to.
