Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know that we have 214 chicks hatching this weekend and another 136 hatching next weekend. I am looking to sell all birds if anyone is interested and I am selling birds any where from 1 day old to adult birds ( when they are of course, which will be in about 10 weeks). If anyone is interested, please let me know.

I am new here. Our farm is located in Johnston. We purchased an elderly gentlemans chicken coop and hens and roosters at the end of February. Total of 25 hens/7 roos. Due to alot of blood shed, we sold all but two Dominique roos and one of them took off to the woods and we could not find him. So one very large roo left and the girls love him and he them. Keeping them separate for now. Since we have added 13 Black and Black Copper Marans, 14 Welsummer & 8 Rhodebar chicks. We currently have 22 eggs in the incubator (Swedish Flower and Blue Splash Ameraurcana) We are getting ready to sell some of the Marans and Welsummer roos. They are starting to crow so it is a matter of time for the fighting to begin....

The nice thing about purchasing the hens (Buff Orp, Dominique, and few other mixes) is we already have great layers. The one thing we are having difficulty finding though is soy free feed. No feed stores to get a good feed mix. I have seen a couple of places in Upstate and Charleston area but no place else. Anyone in my area have a good connection?

Animal protein is better! Birds grow thicker, faster etc etc. If you go to any of the heritage threads say HRIR thread, you can get a lot of good information on the difference between soy based feed vs animal protein based feed. Another thing, chickens are not herbivores, they are omnivores. Meat protein is something they actually need. A lot of people feed them chicken livers cut into small pieces and mixed with there feed. Again a lot of good info in other threads.

As for where you can buy it, good luck. I can't find any feed that has it. Purina Game Bird feed has it I think. Also I think there Breeder feed has it also. That's the only feed any where around here that does that I know of. I have 60 chicks and chickens so I switched to Southern States All-Grain feed. I get the meat bird feed for chicks and roos - 20% protein and the breeder/layer feed for the hens. The cheapest also. $14.95 for a 50lb bag. I can just throw some chicken livers in there every now and again. There cheap also.

I've got a buff that went broody! To my knowledge the only egg under her is a plastic one. I only have one roo that isn't old enough to fertilize anything yet... Is it ok to just let her sit there and steal the eggs as she lays them or should I make her get off her butt?

If she is broody she will stop laying, so eggs under her should not be an issue. She could still lay one or two but that would be it. Poor girl....

If you are planning a Myrtle Beach trip in the next week, and want them, I'd be happy to give you some fertile barnyard mix hatching eggs. Most of my hens are production reds. Long way to go for mutt eggs and to dodge motorcycles on Memorial Day, tho.

I give my chickens table scraps to the horror of my mother and disappointment of my dogs. I don't give them chicken or pork - chicken because that's creepy and pork because I have a Muslim friend who gets eggs from me sometimes. (I don't know that it's a no-no, but just in case. Plus who ever has leftover pork?

) I don't know that I'd want livestock feed that had animal by-products in it though. I think the government has cracked down on it since it's a vector for some really nasty diseases if improperly rendered.

You said "poor girl" is there something wrong with her? Is that why she did it? Everyone else seems happy and content. I thought maybe it was bringing in so many new birds in such a short period of time.
