Hey Anderson/Starr here. New to the group and trying to get started in the backyard chickens. But seems to be harder than I thought to find regulations and covenants for my neighborhood lol. But great site already been a big help!

I'd love to check out a few auctions! Keep us posted if you hear of any.

I am discovering that my neighborhood is rife with stealth chicken-keepers. I think the key success factors are 1) neighbors who are on board, and 2) no roosters.

Up to 10 chickens are allowed within our city limits, but the law reads that your coop has to be at least 20 feet from your property line, and 100 feet from any occupied building. Who has a city or suburban lot that big?'

So: lots of under-the-radar chickens behind 6-foot privacy fences in our neighborhood. We divided up one of our storage buildings and used half of it for the chickenhouse, and the run is situated so you can't see it from the road. One side of the run is a mere 3 feet from the property line, but we asked the neighbor before we got the chickens, and she's fine with it--she's a very rainwater-compost-pile-organic kind of person, and happy to get an endless supply of fresh antibiotic-free eggs.

I'm also scrupulous about keeping the run clean, because the last thing I want is for there to be any smell wafting over into her yard. I've planted honeysuckle vines every 4 feet along the outside of the run, with the idea that they'll eventually climb up over it and obscure it, in case she ever decides to move.

Actually I also have 11 chickens, one over the legal limit. Because I'm from the 60s, and I'm still a radical, sticking it to the man, one hen at a time.

Heehee...so will there be a quiet rooster joining the ranks too? ;)

Off subject, is anyone else going to the show in Jefferson, GA Sat?

I am coming to Blackville, SC for the weekend of 2/7 & 2/8. Any shows or swaps going on nearby? I'm looking for a few wheaten and or lavender marans, double laced blue barnevelders, wheaten and or blue wheaten ameraucanas, a silver penciled wyandotte bantam or penciled rock bantam rooster. I'm in east central Florida so if there's anyone along the way or in the area that will have any of the above, please let me know. Fertile hatching eggs of any of the above would be fine too. Thanks Tammy

News Flash! It's not even posted yet, but the Ameraucana Breeders Club is holding a Special Meet at the Sandlappers Poultry Breeders Association Show, on March 21st. You can find more details about the show here: http://www.poultryshowcentral.com/Sandlappers.html.

This is the first time the Ameraucana Breeders Club has had an event in SC, so c'mon out and let's show 'em what we got!
