Ray/Debi....how do you tell if muffs are single gene just from looking at them? I have EEs and a AM roo and AM hen, would love to be able to look at my EE's and know what genes are in there...lol

also do two muff genes correspond with two blue laying genes then?? or not necessarily?
I don't know, I never had a clean faced Ameraucana.

I have played around with breeding Olive eggers and I had beautifully muffed brown egg layers but I find the tighter the pea comb the bluer the egg. Ameraucanas should have a pea comb.

One you've seen a full set of muffs and beard, it is much easier to discern the single-gene ones.
Below is a picture of a young black pullet. Her muffs and beard are nice and full and closely frame her face - to the point where her eyes area almost lost behind the muffs. (edited to add following) As in all things Ameraucana, however, moderation is the key. We're not looking for the extreme muffs and beard of the Faverolle.

Then, when you look at the rather skimpy muffs and beards of the young blue wheaten pullet, it is easy to see the difference.

Having two copies of the muffs and beard genes has no correlation to eh color. I've had very full muffs and beards on second generation olive Eggers, but they laid an olive green egg.

My leaky blue has what I think is a gorgeous muff. He's OE king now

he is IDENTICAL in the face to his brother...who has an AMAZING muff. He is soooo pretty. We are so happy with him, and can't thank you enough!! I don't think our Blue is leaky, I will take some updated photos and get your opinion. I know you're delving into the world of amerecuana's pretty hard now days, right? :)

Oh and Ray, true BCM should have black feet. my rooster does and hen, and their offspring. white feet is a recessive trait, I believe, and in case...SCFLOCK pay attention here tell me what you think lol....is that the lady I bought eggs from crossed two or three amazing bloodlines, which created a mutt bird pretty much and I think they ended up with white feet that way. The reason this is my belief---my roo came from her. and he has black feet and throws black feet. So I think maybe she inadvertently crossed two great show quality bloodlines, which both happened to have recessive white feet trait, which thus came out in the next generation.....again SCFLOCK, your opinion??

I'm no expert Ray/Debi (which one ARE you Ray or Debi??? lol) I just have read more about BCM than any other breed I have, I love their personalities and I think they are pretty birds.

Yep, they've gotten me more obsessed with chickens than I've ever been. I love having breeder quality birds, and am really looking forward to learning to maintain and improve. I'm on a waiting list for Davis line marans, and once I get that flock going, I think I will start selling off my other flocks and use the pens for AM, BCM, and OEs :thumbsup
PS: the blue I sold you is the one I should have kept. He was gorgeous ;)
