South Carolina

Sounds like an exciting trip! I am so glad mine were quiet.
You sure have some cute new babies.

Well! I had one of the local police stop by this afternoon to tell me I can't have my chickens because they have had "complaints". I had a nice long conversation with the officer because I knew he was just the deliverer of the message, but I'm going to fight this! We have cows across the street, for goodness sake, and goats down the road, but because we are just on the edge of the town I can't have my chickens?

Please send any tips you may have for me!

If you live on family land that has been in your family for a long time the land may be grandfathered in and zoning may not apply. If he did not serve you any papers but just showed up with a verbal warning I would not do a thing.

Another thing- if you call the zoning office, muni offices, etc., do not take them at their word when they tell you something. Either find the code info online or go see the actual papers. They frequently give out misinformation over the phone.

Continue with the polite and persistent approach. You catch more flies with honey...

I agree with RHewitt about laying low for now, that's what I'd do. Wait and see if a second visit even happens. But- behind the scenes, I'd be making sure my coops and runs were all very clean and in good condition, all chickens penned and healthy, not running loose for now. In other words, ready for inspection.

I'd also be cozying up with all the neighbors, giving them eggs- to find out who complained and why. Might be an easy fix, like locking up a roo until later in the morning.

And I'd go ahead on checking out the rules and regs, so you're ready with the info you might need.

Good luck, hope it blows over!
