Good morning Everyone!! I am ready for some sunshine....a few days worth. It doesnt even have to be really warm....just sunny!!! Do any of you have horses? I have the opportunity to have one given to us and was wondering if I need to have a barn with inside stalls for the winter. I had horses in Ca when I was a kid. Just wondering what is needed here. Thanks Tink

My family has horses that are not in a barn. They do however have some type of cover, trees in my case. I think, they need some type of shading when the temp is very hot. As far as the barn, we only stall them when they are not feeling well, or need some resting time. Just make sure they have plenty of water to dring, and I think they will be fine in the pasture. Just a thought.

I just have the one horse left now and he doesn't have a stall anymore. Converted it to a chicken coop!

He stays out in the trees or beside the well house when the wind blows. I felt bad for him about 10 days ago when we had all that snow and ice. He had icicles hanging from his ears!

But he wasn't cold. Too fat to be cold and I gave him plenty of hay and upped his grain a bit. He is 24 yrs old and has been without a stall for more than 2 yrs. Poor fella, it is quite a difference from when he was a young show horse and breeding stallion.
I think I may put a lean to up beside the well house, maybe 3 sided, facing east. He is getting a bit of arthur in his joints.

Thanks for the info. We were planning on building a new chicken coop. I think we might just add on to it and make it a barn for the horse and chickens and somewhere dry to store some hay....

I just recently moved my horses to my house in Waterloo, SC. The neighbors have been raising sand ever since. Animal Control has been to my house 4 times. They have taken pictures of feed, hay, water tub the horses. Then they came back and said the field was too muddy and I would have to move them out of the mud. Then last Tuesday I was informed that there IS a Code and Article that states horses must have a shelter to get in out of the rain. I was given 7 DAYS to have a shelter that consisted of a roof and at least 2 sides for protection from our lovely weather.

They will be by tomorrow to check out the shelter that I errected. I bought a SHED IN A BOX from TSC. I finally got it up today. My boyfriend is going to help me put the tarp on it tomorrow morning.

I hate ugly neighbors !
