I'm brand new to chickens. Right now I have six Welsumer three-week olds. I am getting several varieties in the near future to see which ones I like best, and will thrive in the the humidity and heat of SC. I am in the Army at Ft. Gordon, but live in Aiken, SC. Just moved here in July from Honolulu, but born in S. Dakota, lived in TX a long time, and have also lived in Louisiana & Nebraska. Never been in this neck of the woods before. I'm building a coop that is a miniature midwestern barn. It's taking a long time to build, and certainly not cost effective, but is fun work.

Sounds like there are some Aikenites on the board here. Thanks for the welcome.

I have a flock of Wellies but am selling out of them. Though I love the egg color the birds are not as exciting or meaty as my other breeds so I am keeping a few in my egg flock and selling the rest. They are a nice bird but just not for me. I have so many demands for other breeds and can't keep all these different ones. And since we eat the extra roos they have to have good flesh.

Welcome to BYC and Aiken then, fc! I myself am an Army brat. We did the Texas thing too. How long do you think you'll be stationed here? I've sworn off building large coops after we built this last one. Little ones, okay, but no more big ones, haha. I'm itching to let some of my eggs hatch. You want some Easter Eggers or other Exchequer Leghorn mutts, or maybe some frizzle seramas? I've even got a 7 month old silkie rooster you can have!

Hi everyone. I'm actually in Hilton between Chapin & Columbia. Just have four chickens but if we get thru the winter ok I'm thinking of building a more permanenrt coop. They are due to start laying anyday but I don't know how much the lengthening days will affect them. Son lives in Lexington. We get to Greenwood often and occasionally to Roebuck. Have had more than our share of trips to VA in Charleston but not lately. Look forward to chatting with you. Joy

Try Dry Stall. I've heard other folks say it's as good as DE.

Most all my girls lay through the winter without lights. I have about 22 tractors of different sizes (website should be back up in a month, I hope) and I do not put lights on any of my flocks.
Right now most everyone is molting except the ones hatched last winter so the egg count is down. Only my small Australorp girl is laying through her molt. That amazes me since she is small like a banty but lays a large egg. What a great girl she is. Too bad the others are not as sweet or generous as she is.

Still and all, I am setting about 80 eggs a week in the bator and selling eating eggs. The ducks lay like mad! They are great for my egg sales when the chcikens don't care to lay.
