Hi Beth.

How much longer do your eggs have before hatchin? What kinds of chickens do you have? What part of Trenton are you in? We live near the Bettis Academy/Edgefield County Rec Sports Complex..

We hope to raise some chicks come spring...We haven't been to Country Boy. That's in North Aug right??

No one eats sweet potato casserole? Shame on them! That rocks! Hope everyone has a wonderful day, no matter how big or small. Last year at this time, I didn't even have a farm and was scared to death of chickens.

Ten months and 150 chickens later, I couldn't be happier! I have so much to be thankful for!

It is bad that I am only one that eats it on my mom's side.

On DH's side, a lot of us eat it

My favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving!

I just started with my own chickens last Easter. Even when DH had them, once out of the brooder I never messed with them. He says he never thought he would see me handle chickens. Never even imagined I would reach in and grab a chicken and carry it around

ETA: Of course I don't have 150 either ... yet

You're awful close to me! I'm next to Twin Lakes airport!

21 days til hatch, haha! None of my birds (except the serama girls) have gone broody, I collect the eggs everyday. They ought to be fertile, I've got two white silkie hens and two white silkie roos.

Country Boy is indeed in North Augusta, right by exit 5, across from the DMV.

I have quite the assortment of chickens - exchequer leghorns, blue wheaton ameracaunas, blue laced red wyandottes, Easter eggers, silkies, a red star hen, a barred plymouth rock hen, a cuckoo marans hen, a blue cochin hen, and seramas. I think that's everyone... haha.

Beth,

I see you have alot of chickens, and a great assortment as well. But have any of yours stopped laying? or Slowed down tremendously? Since we see the same weather I though you could be a better help.

Especially your RSL cuz I think thats the only one we have in common....

Could adding new chickens to the flock stress them out enough not to lay?

We added the 2 blk sexlinks and buff orp last weekend My leghorn just went through a molt so she'll prob pick back up i hope....

I haven't noticed any slowdown yet. I think I've got 16 hens, and I'm still picking up about a dozen a day. My blue cochin hen was the last one I added, a couple weeks ago. It took her a while to integrate, I'm sure she didn't lay. I don't think it phased my other girls though. I went and sat with them this morning after I fed the horses and noticed that she was hanging out in the midst of everyone, so I was pleased.

Oh! Speaking of horses, if you live over by the Rec complex, do you remember back in March hearing about a couple horses that escaped, and Edgefield County Sheriff's Dept came to help round them up? It was on Kicks 99 too. They were headed down Nicholson Road.

Hi there, boy I had some reading to do! Still not really caught up completely.

Happy Holidays, Ya'll! Let the madness begin,

Just my DH and I, so we stay home on the holidays. Thanksgiving is usually just another day, though I do roast a whole kosher turkey breast and freeze the leftover for sandwiches. Kosher because they are a cut above the regular store bought, imo. Cranberry-horseradish dressing, I love that stuff so much I eat it with a spoon!

Speaking of spoons, maybe I'll try making good ole southern spoonbread this year. Mmmmmm.... Sweet potatoes get baked, then buttered, with salt and pepper on them. I like the marshmallow casserole, but too much like work for just 2 of us. Maybe the green bean casserole of yore, so I can eat all the fried onions.

And stuffing, gotta have that Peppridge Farm herb stuffing. I put the pan drippings from the turkey breast in it, yum!

Not raising any turkeys, but I do still have 16 hens (NONE laying right now

), 4 ducks (3 Mallards, 1 Mal-mix) and nine bantam Cochins in the brooder. One chick is 2 weeks older than the others and boy howdy, he is already ruling the flock with a feathered fist. Even at 3 weeks I can see he is going to be a handfull as a rooster.

I'd like to sell all 4 female ducks, preferably as a group, they're 7 months now. I haven't seen any eggs, but they might be waiting for spring. I don't mind if you eat them, I'd just rather you NOT tell me!PM me if you're interested, I'm down in Hollywood, south of Charleston.

See, now, I am one of those that has never cared for green bean casserole. Everyone seems to love it but me. I love just plain old green beans with a bit of fresh butter melted onto them. I can eat cooked green beans just as a meal! Lots of iron in them, too.

I know it is hard to make for just 2 people. In a few years our DD may be off on her own adventures and then DH will be looking at each other but we are best friends and that makes life easier.
And yes, it can be just another day as I go about my farm chores. I will try to feed up the day before and make sure everyone has an abundance of water so I can spend more time with the family now.

Oh, btw, did you see it is supposed to be nasty weather for next Thurs. and Fri.? Ugh. I thought of you and your family, Susanne! Outdoor activities look like they are shot! But today is absolutely gorgeous!!!
