I have a turner that fits the hovabator, but I prefer the LG & no turner to fit it - I prefer hand turning because I don't really set that many at one time in it

Less than 2 doz usually

My gma just bought a turner for her LG. Chicky, does your LG have a fan? hers doesn't but I was wondering exactly if that matters or not. Like does she ABSOLUTELY NEED to get a fan. I know it helps keep the air more uniform, but she didnt need to spend money if it wasnt a dire necessity.

Also, Epitman "eric" has a homemade bator and he turns by hand like 8 times a day.

Your barred Rock is actually a Dominique. The comb gives it away.
And your buff Orps may actually be red sex links.
I had someone give me some girls claiming they were RIRs, which is why I wanted them. I saw them and informed the person those are not RIRs and they were adamant that they were. Now I ain't the brightest bulb in the drawer (

) but I know a RIR from a sex link. I now have red sex links though that person still insists these birds with a lot of white are RIRs because that is what the person that sold them to them told them.

Thanks! I wasn't sure exactly what my hens were..I was pretty sure they weren't what the people told me though!

Most people that work at the feed stores really haven't a clue about breeds of chickens. I find that very interesting since they are working for the farm community but a lot of folks don't care about breeds, only the eggs.

When DH and I first thought of getting a lot more chickens we did not care what breed at first and figured we would just let them hatch whatever they wanted, mixed or not. Then we found out more about the breeds and realized we liked certain aspects of these breeds. I still love mixed breed chickens but also breed pures for what I KNOW I will get.

A mix breed is still a great bird, imho. My RIR/Delaware girls are totally awesome birds. The Langshan/Jersey Giant roos are humongous! Yum! And the pullets are not small either! Can't wait to see those eggs.

I like to cross up breeds to see what I will get but I try to do it for my own pleasure and to keep in my flock but sometimes folks see them and like them as well as I do.

Rookie question? Dont laugh! lol what does Buff indacate? I see some people say they have a (buff orpington) I have a buff Brahma. How is it different from a plain Brahma?

Yup, that is as rookie as you can get. Sorry!

But it is not a stupid question. There are no stupid questions.

Buff is color. It has nothing to do with breed.

I agree no question is stupid.

I can see why the Buff thing could be a little confusing. Around here I hear people referring to Buff Orpington's as (Yellow Buff's) That would lead one to think Buff might be it's own breed. I am convinced people make up their own names for all kinds of things.

i just put 56 eggs in the hatcher. just put 90 eggs in the incabater 18 bourbon red turkry eggs, 13 jumbo ringneck pheasants, and 59 chicken eggs. blrw, speckeld sussex, buff orpington, and americuanas w/bw

Hey John, I have a turner in my home built, with a fan. It is maybe a $10 investment, pretty cheap from Best Buy or a Radio Shack. Worth it I think, but I have a BIG bator!! ....stan
