South Carolina

I have 8 heirloom tomatoes. I went a little crazy last year in the garden and it got ahead of me. My husband is restricting me this year!I have a row of snap peas and snow peas. I have broccoli, brussel sprouts, herbs, cantaloupe, cucumber and all colors of sweet peppers. But only ONE plant each. I just bought zucchini today. I'll sneak in a few more when he's not looking. Oh... and spaghetti squash (love it!). I just took the seeds out of the last one I cooked and put a few in the garden.

My wry necks refuse to die and refuse to get better! I've been tending those 5 for three days now. They are getting weaker and weaker. It's breaking my heart. They have a will to live. I don't even know how they managed to hatch. Bless their little chicken hearts!

to all the new people!

Last year I was in a temporary run with some month old chicks and Mr. Bunny, an elderly standard rabbit. Mr. Bunny would slowly approach a chick and it would run away screaming.

It occurred to me that Mr. Bunny wasn't trying to be mean. I picked up a chick and held it with its butt toward Mr. Bunny. Bun hopped over and smelled the chicken butt. Satisfied, he hopped away and pretty much ignored the babies for the rest of the afternoon.

I guess rabbits like to sniff butts like dogs do.

I am doing the exact same thing this year, going garden crazy that is. I have sweet corn, tomatos, green peppers, beans, carrots, potatoes and onions in a tiny 8 x 6 plot and my huisband just keeps shaking his head.

Just finished updating my tomato notes...26 varieties of tomatoes...I have plants all over the place. Lettuce and arugula are doing great...beans are up as is okra and corn...peppers thriving...now I figure we will get a freeze! Anyone in the sumter area need some llama or horse poop for their gardens?...my animals are very obliging when it comes to that!

Is chicken poop good for gardens? I have been putting the used bedding for the brooders out into the garden to help control weeds along the beds. I have more than enough horse poop to shovel over there is chicken poop isn't.

I have to figure out where to put a garden so the hose will reach but the chickens and ducks don't! There is something to be said for this free ranging .....gardening danger!

Last year we did fence it in but only had a 10x10 garden. I did not get to grow or harvest as much as I would have liked. I am used to a half acre of garden. Haven't had that since Daddy passed away about 6 years ago. I would still love to put in a 1/4 acre but with free ranging birds, I would have to build a biiiiiiggggg fence.

Hmmmmmm, we did talk about a get together here.......I bet I could get enough hammers, nails and poultry fence and we could white wash....er, I mean build a fence to enclose 1/4 acre! (whitewash in reference to Tom Sawyer) You all just would think it is a play day!

I would love to set out about 26 mater plants. We eat a lot of those and the Guinea Pigs and chickens adore tomatoes. We had 9 plants last year and by the end of the summer the animals were looking at the tomatoes like they were afraid of them! They had had so many they probably thought that they would turn into one if they ate another!
