I don't think there's a "set" date/age on when it's okay to put them in the main coop without a heat lamp, but I felt all of mine were well feathered out at 4-weeks of age and with night-time temps not getting below 45-degrees here in South Carolina (back in April)...I evicted mine from the "brooding" box. I've got at least 5 different breeds and raised them all from 1-day old...only one loss (to a dog). I do know some folks that believe in Darwinism "the tough will survive" and have put theirs out at 3 weeks and earlier. I just tend to baby mine a little more than those folks. I think those of us with small flocks tend to be that way..."nurturing." If I had hundreds....I may not have the time to spoil them all! I would probably try though!

Well.....I'm the person with 12 week old chicks still under heat.

And I can tell you that I have several hundred birds. My house is a train wreck, the yard isn't much better - but my chickens are HAPPY!!

Been doing this for years and I just can't bring myself to put those itty bittys outside. I was outside at 2:00 a.m. last night (in the rain) checking on my big chicks. Turned one heat lamp back on for one group and also checked on a duck with babies to make sure she was doing her job.

I forgot about Joy's spoiled birds.

I do not spoil mine

We do not count Forrest the bantam mottled cochin still in the brooder at 3 or 4 months old. Nor do we count a few others I deem too small to be outside - mostly bantams! Sheesh

If anyone else is in Sumter I have a question. Have you bought chicks from the TSC here and have you had coccidiosis in your flock? I have a small flock of 20 that are only boxed at night with a bad case of cocci. Just curious if I have bad luck or if anyone else has had issues. I feel so unfortunate because I've only been a chicken mom for about 2 1/2 months.
